Title: Understanding tinnitus – in the brain and in the community

Abstract: Tinnitus is the perception of a continuous sound without an external sound source. About 8-15% of the population of UK and Ireland are impacted of which 2-5% are severely disabled. Tinnitus is not simply an auditory percept but a complex interaction between sensory, cognitive, behavioural and emotional components. In this talk, Dr. Anusha Yasoda-Mohan will walk us through the exploration of tinnitus from a network perspective and how different brain regions interact to encode the chronic tinnitus percept. She will also talk about the reality of tinnitus in the community and her work in bringing this community together in Ireland.

Biography:

Dr. Anusha Yasoda-Mohan is a Global Atlantic Fellow for Equity in Brain Health and a Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Trinity College Institute for Neuroscience and School of Psychology at Trinity College Dublin. She is also a trained Indian classical and Bollywood dancer. Dr. Yasoda-Mohan in a multidisciplinary researcher with an undergraduate and masters’ degree in Biomedical Engineering, PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Postdoc in Psychology. She primarily works with people with tinnitus (continuous tinging in the ear), investigating how brain networks communicate with one another to generate tinnitus using resting state and task-based EEG. Currently, she is working on expanding the cognitive aspects of tinnitus and investigating if there is a relationship between tinnitus and cognitive decline. In addition to studying phantom auditory perception, she is the Director of the International Tinnitus Research Initiative Foundation’s dissertation and communication wing (TRI Academy) which strives to take tinnitus research and clinical practices to the wider tinnitus research community. She also leads a community for people living with tinnitus in Ireland called Tinnitus Éire through which she strives to bring a sense of community and belonging for tinnitus sufferers. Additionally, she is the co-developer of Brain For Movement (BrainFM) – an education and awareness workshop aimed at communicating complex neuroscience topics through dance to primary school age children. These tie together with her vision to leverage the arts as a medium to both comprehend and communicate the working of the brain.
