Documentary Night: The Drake Equation

Recently, as part of an innovative and fresh approach, i.e. a non-traditional meeting event: we presented video documentaries. This was very warmly received. So we decided to continue the good work.

We proudly present the DocumentaryThe Search for Life The Drake Equation

Summary: A look at the Drake equation, developed by Dr. Frank Drake as a way to think about the number of extraterrestrial civilizations in our galaxy that could exist and communicate with us

WEBEX client will be needed. Link will be sent 1 hour before

AFTER the movie - we can have a brief discussion session. NOTE: You must supply your own soda pop and popcorn! :-) Trivia may also follow, so bring your Jeopardy hats too. We are celebrating this on the occasion of Frank's birthday (May 28th, 1930).

The Search for Life: The Drake Equation

In 1960, Dr Frank Drake came up with the Drake Equation - a formula calculating the likelihood of extraterrestrial intelligence from seven key elements. The figures, approximate as they were, suggested the number of alien civilizations able to communicate with Earth was at least 10,000.

But with the recent discovery of microbes which thrive in an arsenic-rich environment, scientists are now contending with the idea that life on Earth arose not once, but twice. Such a discovery would have profound implications for the Drake Equation and the search for alien life, as Dallas Campbell learned when he met NASA astrobiologist Dr Felisa Wolfe-Simon.
