Channel Occupancy Modeling and Spectrum Selection in Cognitive Radio Networks

In a cognitive radio network, channels in a spectrum are shared by licensed (primary) and unlicensed (secondary) users in that preferential order. It is generally recognized that the spectral occupancy by primary users exhibit dynamic spatial and temporal properties and hence the fundamental issue is to characterize channel occupancy in terms of probabilistic distributions. Existing research have considered Beta distribution in modeling spectrum occupancy of primary users in a licensed spectrum. This talk will provide validation results in the cognitive radio paradigm using real-time measurements performed at Aachen in Germany on the 1500 MHz spectrum centered at 770 MHz. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is applied as a validation approach. The simulation results confirm the validity of Beta distribution modeling of spectrum occupancy. With this channel occupancy distribution, we have extended our research in modeling spectrum availability by proposing a new Poisson-normal approximation method. Further, we characterize available channels in a spectrum into five different types based on occupancy of its two adjacent channels. The probabilistic modeling of each of these types is determined using recurrence relations. In this presentation, results will be discussed with respect to the defined channel types and will illustrate facilitation of spectrum selection using our proposed modeling technique. Finally, this talk will conclude with some future directions of cognitive radio towards green communication and coexistence in the TV White Spaces.

Biography: Dr. Chittabrata Ghosh is currently a Post Doctoral Researcher in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Washington, Seattle. He had completed his doctoral studies in the Computer Science Department at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. Chittabrata is the author of the book titled “Spectrum Selection, Sensing, and Sharing in Cognitive Radio Networks,” published in May 2010 by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing, Saarbrucken, Germany. He was invited for guest lectures by several research laboratories and departments for his expertise in the area of cognitive radio networks. His research interests are in the area of heterogeneous cognitive radio networks, interference channels, smart grid, and coexistence issues in the TV White Space. He is currently serving as the Editor for the IEEE Technical Committee of Simulations (TCSIM). He is also a member of the IEEE.
