IEEE WIE AG Technical Talk on Advances in Healthcare, Image Processing and Internet Of  Medical Things

For the last few decades,  the   developments in treatment methods and surgeries are  increasing in healthcare, with the advancement of   imaging systems, image processing, artificial intelligence techniques, robotics, high speed computing systems, large capacity storage devices,  wide spread high speed  internet and Wi-Fi facilities, lasers etc., Image  processing  has been  playing a major role in  easy diagnosis of diseases, non-invasive surgeries, remote surgeries, autonomous hospital facilities and many more activities for healthcare. Image processing and hyper-spectral or multi-spectral imaging techniques, greatly help diagnosing various eye diseases - like Glaucoma, Age related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Diabetic Retinopathy etc. Early stage detection of breast cancer is important to decrease the mortality rate. The Internet of medical things (IoMT) is another  application for medical and health related areas, for creating a digitized healthcare systems, for treating patients from their homes and  connecting available medical resources and healthcare services. To meet the  worldwide demand for pathologists and for objective results, laboratories are incorporating    digitization  pathology with analytical software and artificial intelligence (AI).  Pandemic has  demanded Iot, collaborative research between various healthcare companies and hospitals etc.,  to get healthcare from homes, which was changing patient safety from hospital to home. Key hole surgery and robotic surgery are taking important role in healthcare, giving advantage to patients for faster recovery and  early return to work.Robotic surgeries are used  for treating patients from  remote  places. Controlling  robos with brain signal is another on going research. Students  would have lot of scope to carry out projects and designing sub-systems  in these areas. During the past  years, hospitals are  witnessing  a decline in inpatient volumes along with a corresponding rise at outpatient utilization. This ongoing shift to the outpatient setting has been driven largely by advances in minimally invasive surgical techniques and advanced anesthesia techniques that allow patients to recover more quickly. Hospital on wheels  facilitate   employs in corporate companies to  visit doctors, avail dental care, eyecare and availing  minor surgical procedures, etc.,  Most challenging task is providing minimum Healthcare facilities   for Rural and semi urban areas.

Biography:

Dr.K.M.M.Rao joined Indian Institute of Science(I.I.Sc), Bangalore in 1973, He designed  and developed  Black and White and Colour Drum Scanner Imager, first time in India, for digitizing and reproducing various types of photographic prints. At Institute of Science, he carried out research in Image Processing, Aerial Remote Sensing and Photowriting.  Since 1976, he worked in  National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC)/ISRO in various positions. He was designated as Operations Director for Indian Remote Sensing Satellites,IRS-1C in 1996 and IRS-1D in 1997. He was Deputy Director (Data Processing Area) at NRSC, till December 2006.  As  adjunct faculty  BITS-Pilani associated with Hyderabad campus, he established and taught the courses, Digital Image Processing and Remote Sensing. At BITS,Hyderabad,he guided students for their research projects and also  supervised Ph.D students in medical image processing. He  worked in  IRS projects, starting from  1km resolution  satellite to 80 cm  resolution satellites in  ISRO.He has designed and developed number of technologies for Image Processing and Remote Sensing applications. He obtained five patents for his designs. He got number of  awards for his inventions viz.,National Academy of Science India Award along with a gold medal, citation and cash award, in         the field of Instrumentation in 1995. Drum Scanner-Digitizer bagged the Best Invention Award in 1994. Presidential Award for Meritorious Invention of Color Photowrite System on 15th August, 1993.Best Invention Award for Color Photo write System in 1992.Engineer of the Year Award from Institute of Engineers, AP State Centre for 1989.Satellite Image Processing System (SIPS) bagged Best Invention Award in 1989. IEEE award for notable services during 2021-2022.9.As a chair,IEEE LMAG  bagged IEEE award for conducting more number of events during 2022.Etc.,He is Fellow of Institute of Electronics & Telecommunications (IETE) India, Fellow of ISNT, Life Senior Member IEEE (US), Life Member Indian Society of Remote Sensing (ISRS). He is Chair, Life Member Affinity group, IEEE Hyderabad Section. He has around 150 research publications/reports to his credit. He has supervised more than  300 graduateand undergraduate students in their research projects. Six of his students got Ph.D from JNTU, Hyderabad and BITS-Pilani.Brought out a Special Issue of International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation on Indian Remote Sensing Satellite, Resourcesat-1 as guest editor.
