Two Days Hands-on Workshop on LoRa Gateway-Based SoC
The Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, in association with IEEE Madras Section, IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, Madras Chapter, and IEEE Student Branch at Vel Tech, organized a two-day workshop on LoRa Gateway based System-on-Chips (SoC). This event, held on September 20th and 21st, 2023, was a platform for attendees to delve into the intricacies of LoRa technology, guided by esteemed experts Dr. K. Subramanian and Jagadeeshwaran from EnthuTechnolofy Solutions, Coimbatore.
Day 1 Highlights:
The first day of the workshop commenced with an insightful session on IoT fundamentals, encompassing architecture and diverse applications. The discussion also covered practical utility in both wired and wireless communication technologies within the IoT domain. An overview of various types of Bluetooth technologies was presented, laying the foundation for the subsequent discussions. A key focus of the workshop was the significance of low-power wireless communication technology. The instructors provided valuable insights into LoRa and LoRaWAN technologies, detailing the specific frequency spectrum allocated for India. Furthermore, participants were introduced to the advantageous features of Thingzmate's proprietary cloud platform. An in-depth briefing on the ESP32 board, including pinouts, architecture, and onboard components, was also provided. Practical sessions involved registering and setting up Thingzmate accounts.
Day 2 Highlights:
The second day of the workshop featured sessions on LoRaWAN and its practical applications. Hands-on training centered around temperature sensing using the DHT11 sensor in conjunction with the ESP32 trainer board. This practical session included the transmission of sensor data to the Thingzmate cloud, providing participants with a tangible understanding of LoRa technology. Attendees were also familiarized with issuing commands, such as triggering the onboard LED to turn on or off via the Thingzmate cloud dashboard. Additionally, an introduction to FPGA concepts and the internal architecture of FPGAs was presented, broadening the participants' understanding of related technologies.
The workshop culminated with a presentation of EnthuTech's industrial projects, showcasing successful implementations for clients. This provided attendees with a glimpse into real-world applications and potential future directions in the field. The two-day workshop on LoRa Gateway based SoC was a resounding success, attracting a diverse group of enthusiastic students and research scholars. The sessions and hands-on training provided a comprehensive understanding of LoRa technology and its integration with SoCs. The event empowered participants with the proficiency needed to construct and set up LoRa gateways seamlessly. The organizers, speakers, and participants collectively contributed to making this event an enlightening and enriching experience for all involved.
