The joint Northern Virginia/Washington PES Chapter, in cooperation with the Control Systems and Industrial Application Societies of Northern Virginia, is pleased to present Bob Carritte who will be speaking about the impact of open phase conductors in the vicinity of nuclear power stations.  The presentation will discuss the failure modes and alternative approaches for detecting open phase conductors on station service equipment.

Alternative Approaches for Detecting Open Phase Conductors on Station Service Transformers

In January 2012, an open circuit in a single phase conductor occurred on an overhead 345 kV power line feeding the two system auxiliary transformers (SATs) at commercial nuclear plant in the United States.  The open phase event caused unbalanced voltages and a significant plant transient because the original plant design did not anticipate this type of unusual failure.  Reviews of industry operating experience indicate that such types of failures are more common than desired.  The degree of voltage unbalanced realized during open phase conditions depends heavily on the transformer type and loading. 


This talk will summarizes industry operating experience with open phase conditions affecting system auxiliary transformers, highlight the design requirements for AC power at commercial nuclear power plants, and describe the technical challenges and solutions techniques of automatically detecting open phase conditions.

Biography:

Robert Carritte is an electric power engineer with Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Technology and Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degrees from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. He also earned a Master of Engineering degree in Electric Power Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Mr Carritte is a member of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) and a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

For the last 30 years, Mr. Carritte has worked for MPR Associates, a mid-size engineering firm headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia. At MPR, he has worked a wide variety of challenging engineering projects involving different types of facilities and technologies, including nuclear, coal, and gas fired power plants, large scale wind farms, high voltage switchyards and substations, transmission lines, LNG facilities, petrochemical and steel facilities, and naval vessels.

Currently, Mr. Carritte is a Principal Officer at MPR. In that role, he is responsible for developing a vision and direction for the business enterprise that provides opportunities for growth in a sustainable manner consistent with the company's culture and values.
