As the saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Similarly, a graph can be worth dozens of statistical calculations. Well-chosen graphical methods are an important part of successful data analysis. Graphs of individual data values provide insight into central tendency, variation, time trends, and correlation. This talk will introduce this valuable category of statistical graphics, show how specific graphical methods provide these insights and provide examples of each of these graphs.

Statistical Insights with Graphs of Individual Data Values

As the saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Similarly, a graph can be worth dozens of statistical calculations. Well-chosen graphical methods are an important part of successful data analysis. Graphs of individual data values provide insight into central tendency, variation, time trends, and correlation. This talk will introduce this valuable category of statistical graphics, show how specific graphical methods provide these insights and provide examples of each of these graphs.

As a result of the session, participants will be able to

  • Understand the insights available through graphs of individual data values
  • Apply step-by-step methods to use spreadsheets and statistical software to create individual value plots, run charts, normal probability plots and scatterplots
  • Apply tips and tricks for successful use of these key graphical tools.
