ABSTRACT “Global Governance of AI – on the Interim Report of the UN AI Advisory Body”:

Virginia Dignum - as a member of this board - will talk about the interim report of the UN Advisory Board on AI – called “Governing AI for Humanity”. It was released on Dec 21, 2023. The report can be seen as an important for a really world-wide governance. The central piece of the report is a proposal to strengthen international governance of AI by carrying out critical functions such as scanning for risks or supporting international collaboration. It also includes recommendations to enhance accountability and ensure an equitable voice for all countries.scussion will be both, technical details of the final outcome and also the political process that led to this result. The report should also be seen in the context of the EU AI Act and a possible Brussels effect w.r.t. regulation.

Short Bio of Virginia Dignum:

She is a professor in Responsible Artificial Intelligence and the Director of the AI Policy Lab at the University of Umea, Sweden. In addition to the UN Advisory group she is a member of GPAI, the Global Partnership on AI, Dutch AI Alliance (ALLAI-NL), the World Economic Forum Council on AI, and the High-Level Expert Group on the Implementation of the UNESCO AI Ethics Recommendation. Previously she was member of European Commission High Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence, the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethically Aligned Design of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems, the Delft Design for Values Institute, the European Global Forum on AI (AI4People), the Responsible Robotics Foundation, Her research focuses on Responsible artificial intelligence and the analyzis and formalization of social interaction.

Short Bio of George Metakides:

George Metakides is visiting professor at the University of Southampton, Adjunct Professor at the European University of Cyprus, President of the Digital Enlightenment Forum, and Advisor to several international organizations. He is involved in the analysis of the economic, political and social impact of digitization, related cybersecurity, data protection and regulatory issues and the promotion of international cooperation towards a digital ecosystem respecting shared human values. He has held senior positions with responsibility for Research & Development policy, funding and international co-operation in European institutions including the Directorship of the ESPRIT program and has contributed to the establishment of international institutions (including the launch of the World Wide Web consortium in 1993), has received a number of awards and honorary degrees and is a corresponding member of several National Academies.
