User-Inspired Digital Agriculture Through Multimodal Data and Artificial Intelligence
Biography:
Dr. Abhilash Chandel is an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist at Virginia Tech University, USA. He is an affiliate faculty of Biological Systems Engineering, Center for Advanced Innovation in Agriculture (CAIA), and Tidewater Agricultural Research and Extension Center. He obtained his PhD from Washington State University, and his Bachelor of Technology and Master of Technology from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. Dr. Chandel currently leads the user-inspired precision agriculture and data management program where he extensively utilizes the principles of precision and digital technologies to solve problems of production agriculture for field, specialty, and forestry crops. His major focus areas include but are not limited to; spectral remote sensing (Handheld, Ground, Aerial, and Satellite-based); biotic and abiotic stress mitigation and management using multi-modal data fusion, artificial intelligence applications; smartphone and edge computing systems; and open-data frameworks for user-driven production management. The major crops of his research include groundnut, maize, soybean, cotton, sugarcane, fava bean, potato, broccoli, sweet corn, wheat, apples, grapevines, and American chestnuts, among others. He extensively conducts research trials using the technologies mentioned and has obtained over $ 1 Million directly into his program and has been part of about $ 4 Million worth of projects solicited from federal and state US agencies within 2 years of his appointment. Over his PhD program and less than two years of current position, he has authored and co-authored over 45 peer-reviewed publications and serves as a Guest Editor for two pioneering journals in the area. In addition, he works extensively with the growers to identify their needs and deliver back effective crop production management soluti
