Frequency, voltage, customer interruption. What do these vital signs tell us about the bulk power system? Learn the basic grid health underlying the vital signs and how to accurately assess them.  Since the 2003 Northeast Blackout, regulation of the electric power industry and standardization of operations by utilities have increased.  Has the grid reliability improved?  The vital signs – frequency, voltage, and customer interruption – communicate important information about the status of the grid reliability.  In this presentation, we explore reliability aspects of bulk power system underlying the vital signs so that you will develop a systematic, integrated understanding of how to assess the bulk power system reliability.  Additional indicators include energy emergency alerts, transmission outage rates, protection system operations, and resource reserve margin.  We discuss ranges, trends, and driving factors that influence changes in these indicators.

The event is free, but registration is required for secure access to the ITC Holdings building.  A photo ID will be required.  Pizza and beverages will be provided.

4 PDHs will be provided to IEEE members.

Dr. Jessica Bian Dr. Jessica Bian

Biography:

Dr. Jessica Bian is a visionary leader and architect. She has spearheaded electric industry's reliability metrics and grid risk assessment. She is currently with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in Washington, DC. Prior to FERC, she was the Director of Performance Analysis at the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). Under her leadership, a total of 18 industry-wide reliability indicators and three composite indices were established first time to determine the reliability, adequacy, and associated risks to the interconnected North American bulk power system. In spring 2012, she steered multiple technical industry groups and directed completion of the first-ever industry-wide State of Reliability report. It marked a major step forward in benchmarking the North American grid reliability. She is widely recognized as a pioneer and trusted world leader in the field.

Before joining NERC, Dr. Bian was with PJM Interconnection and ERCOT, responsible for real-time operations support, resource economic dispatch and operator training simulator projects. She started her career at Westinghouse Electric; was involved in generator design and Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) applications.

Dr. Bian holds two patents and published over 70 articles in transactions, journals and proceedings. She received the 2014 IEEE PES Wanda Reder Pioneer in Power Award for her technical accomplishments and being an inspiring role model to young women engineers in power. She is the Secretary of the IEEE Power and Energy Society.
