Abstract:

David E. Whitehead, P.E., is the vice president of Research and Development at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL). He will be presenting on several topics relevant to our industry. Dave will discuss the benefits of faster line protection, limitations of present-day phasor-based protection, and features and benefits of the SEL T400L Time-Domain Line Protection Relay. For safety and reduction of copper, SEL is digitizing the substation by offering an IEC-61850 Sampled Value relay and merging unit. In tandem, SEL is also providing another solution called TiDL that has all the benefits of SV relays but with a higher sampling rate and easier setup. As we become more reliant on data networks, SEL is also packaging an Ethernet switch with Software Defined Network (SDN) schemes that allow for multiple data paths and extremely fast fail-over times. Time permitting, Dave will also address concerns on how to protect against Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) attacks. Please join us as Dave Whitehead discusses some of the latest technologies and products that SEL is developing.
