Dr. Raj Kumar Dr. Raj Kumar of Indian Space Research Organisation

Dr Raj Kumar, is presently Prof Satish Dhawan Scientist at Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad, ISRO, after his superannuation from the post of Director, National Remote Sensing Centre, ISRO in February 2022. He is actively involved in mentoring young scientists for cutting edge science and applications with spaceborne sensors and involved in reviewing several key ongoing and upcoming applications projects. 

Biography:

Dr. Raj Kumar began his career with ISRO after  his Masters in Physics and over the years, has held several key positions within the organization. His expertise in the field of remote sensing and GIS technology has made him a respected figure in the scientific community, and has made significant contributions to the development of remote sensing technology in India. Prior to his tenure as Director, NRSC, as Deputy Director in Space Applications Centre (ISRO), Ahmedabad, he had been instrumental in launching long term programs in various disciplines of Earth System science studies such as Hydrology, Atmosphere, Ocean, Cryosphere, Agriculture and Geo Sciences.

He has more than 125 publications in peer reviewed Journals of International repute and has also supervised more than 10 young researchers and still guiding  young scientists for their Ph.D.  He is recipient of Various awards viz, Satish Dhawan Award, Vikram Sarabhai Award, Prof PR Pisharoty Memorial Award and ISRO team excellence Award. Dr Raj Kumar  played pivot role in propelling collaborations with international space agencies in remote sensing and also represented ISRO as Alternate Principal in International Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) and Co-Chair of CEOS-COAST. He has been Science Lead of ISRO-NASA joint NISAR Project.

He is a fellow of Indian Meteorological Society and has played a major role in the professional societies as President of Indian Meteorological Society, Ahmedabad Chapter, Member of National Committee of IMS, Chairman of Indian Society of Remote Sensing, Ahmedabad Chapter and also served as President of Indian Society of Geomatics.
