American Magnetic Telegraph
What is called "the American Magnetic Telegraph" began in 1847 with Samuel Morse's invention. What followed was an intense flurry of invention and development of telegraph devices and worldwide systems. The program will include a slide presentation on the telegraph system, a demonstration of a telegrapher's workstation from 1900, and exhibition of several devices that made up the telegraph system in the USA.

Biography:
Tom O'Brien joined IRE in 1961, just before it merged with AIEE to become IEEE. He earned a BSEE from Texas A&M (1966) and MS from SMU (2000). His career included avionics, airline reservations, space transportation, robotics, petrochemicals, and software development. Tom's amateur radio hobby began in 1958 and included radiotelegraphy, radiotelephony, data transmission, radio contesting, and building electronics.
