Three Earth Observation Projects and Antenna Measurements

On Thursday 20 June, a visit to ESA Estec is planned.

As an IEEE Life-member LMAG Benelux (or a Life-member within a few years) you are welcome to attend.

Estec is the technical centre of the European Space Agency, with project groups involved in technical management of various ESA space activities. ESA has 22 member-states collaborating to realise space projects. With their contributions the work is organised in these 22 member-states, with directions like Scientific Projects (obligatory), Earth observation, telecommunication, manned space activities, technical support to such directions and more. Collaborations with other space agencies take place as well. Extensive information is found on www.esa.int, with good details about the topics presented.

On 20 June three actual Earth Observation projects and a large antenna and payload test facility are presented.

  • 11:45 (not later than 11:45): check in at Estec gatehouse  - Keplerlaan 1, Noordwijk,
    • to Robert Willemsen at Main Building Entrance Estec
  • 12:00 Lunch main restaurant, in group, tray lunch, escort Kees van 't Klooster
  • 13:10 transfer to Erasmus Earth room

Three presentations will be given about three approved Earth observation projects and about antenna testing:

  • 13:15 CIMR mission, a microwave radiometry mission with a large deployable antenna, by Mr. Rolv_Midhassel
  • 14:00 Harmony -receive only in conjunction with Sentinel-1 and Biomass - Earth Explorer mission, by Mr. Björn_Romme,
  • 14:45 Antenna Measurement  -for Space Applications - by Mr. Luis_Rolo.
  • 15:30 Break
  • 15:50 Hertz facility - by Mr. Luis Rolo
  • 17:00 End visit

Note: Extensive information has been given in the invitation sent to you by email, ID card or passport or driver-licence required and must be shown at the entrance of Estec.

VTOOLS registration is not sufficient in this case and therefore registration before 15 June shall be done by an email to IEEE-LMAG secretary c.g.v.t.klooster@tue.nlThe latter email has to contain information as nationality and affiliation.

Take note of the invitation sent to you by email (Benelux IEEE Lifemember Affinity Group). Please take note of the details provided in the email-invitation. Estec requires a list before and you have to bring your passport, or driver license or ID card (without: no access).

In this event pictures and videos could be recorded for use in reports and publications on the event and IEEE LMAG activities. In case you do not agree to be photographed or appear on videos recorded, please indicate this explicitly together with this registration via email to the IEEE Benelux Section LMAG secretary: Kees van 't Klooster C.G.v.t.Klooster@tue.nl at least one day before the event starts.

  Speakers

Mr. Rolv Midthassel

Topic:

A new Earth observation mission: CIMR

A radiometry mission with a large deployable reflector antenna, observing in several frequency bands.

Mr. Björn Romme

Topic:

Two approved Earth observation missions: Harmony and Biomass

Harmony, a receive-only mission, operating in conjunction with Sentinel-1 of Copernicus.

Biomass, and Earth Explorer mission, due for launch end 2024, to measure the global Biomass

Mr. Luis Rolo

Topic:

Antenna measurements for specific space applications

Space applications are exploiting antennas, for data linksand for very precise sensing applications. Assessment of antenna performances has to be realised before launch, requiring accurate antenna measurements.
