The Next Step in the Journey of a Protection and Control Relay

Explore the extensive journey of Protection and Control in power systems, spanning over a century from Electromechanical Relays to the cutting-edge world of Virtualization. The presentation will showcase the significance of key innovations, such as IEC 61850. Additionally, it will delve into the transformative benefits of Virtualization and how it will revolutionize the construction and maintenance of the power grid of the future. Standards development in industry organizations like IEEE and the vPAC alliance will also be discussed.

Biography:

Melvin completed his Master’s in Electrical Engineering at Texas A&M University, College Station. He currently works as an Electrical Engineer - Grid Solutions at Black & Veatch, where he supports various Power Grid-related projects for

multiple clients nationwide. Additionally, he actively participates in standards development within IEEE and NERC, specifically focusing on Protection and Control as well as System Studies. Outside of work, he loves to travel and explore new places.
