Dick Jones

Biography:

Mr. Richard Jones received a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from New Mexico State University in 1975, where he also participated in the cooperative education program at Houston Lighting and Power.  In 1985 he earned a Masters degree in Electric Power Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  He has held electrical engineering & design positions with the US Navy, Eastman Kodak Company (Rochester, NY), the New England Electric System (Westborough, MA) and Tech S Corp (Westborough, MA).  He has also provided Owner’s Engineer and Project Management services as part of  the Energy Initiatives Group and EnEngineering (Marlborough, MA).

With over 40 years of experience, his assignments have included: development of HV and EHV Gas and Air Insulated Substation conceptual designs and equipment specifications, preparation of construction project cost estimates, equipment bid analysis and procurement, factory equipment witness testing, project management & construction supervision, large generation & transmission system interconnections, facility commissioning & start-up and failure investigations.

Richard has worked directly with Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) designs, applications and repairs since 1987.  Some of the National Grid New England facilities where he provided project engineer services include Golden Hills, Brayton Point, Manchester Street, Ward Hill, Tewksbury 22A, Wachusett Junction and Wakefield Junction .  At Wachusett Junction he worked as the OEM’s on-site construction manager; that project involved 115kV/345kV GIS modifications and a 448MVA auto transformer interconnection.  Most recently in Tewksbury, MA he managed replacement of circa 1980’s ITE GIS with Siemens state of the art 345kV equipment.  Richard has also been the lead engineer on multiple GIS failures including the bus faults at several 345kV and a 115kV bulk power substations.   Other GIS assignments include: designing a breaker retrofit at a refinery/co-gen facility in New Jersey, providing owner engineer services for Northeast Utilities/Eversource at the Plumtree, Norwalk and South Kensington GIS facilities and providing conceptual designs for GIS substations in New York.

As a senior life member of the IEEE Power Engineering Society on the Substation Committee KO subcommittee starting in the 1990’s, Mr. Jones has helped prepare multiple GIS Standards and Guidelines.  He is also a contributing author to the Gas Insulated Substations Handbook published by Wiley.
