IoT4Community 2023
On 18 November 2023, the IEEE Sarawak Subsection, together with the IEEE Swinburne Sarawak Student Branch, held the "IoT4Community 2023" workshop. This event, focusing on Internet of Things (IoT) technology, benefited from contributions by the Swinburne Computer Science Club and the Swinburne Robotics Club, which enriched the educational experience.
The workshop commenced with an overview of the Cytron Maker Feather S3 microcontroller, which features built-in WiFi suitable for IoT projects. The session covered the fundamentals of operating electronic components, emphasizing voltage and current requirements. Utilization of a breadboard for connecting components was a key aspect, highlighting power distribution and wiring practices.
Further sessions delved into advanced wiring and component integration, such as the NeoPixel Ring and the MPU6050 motion sensor. A significant part of the workshop was devoted to programming and the use of cloud services. This included setting up computers for IoT development, programming the Feather microcontroller, and using Blynk, a cloud service for IoT projects. Participants learned to build and manage a cloud dashboard with Blynk for remote IoT device management.
The workshop provided a comprehensive introduction to IoT, its significance, methodologies for constructing IoT systems, and the role of the Internet in these systems. It concluded with proposals for future IoT projects and resources for continued education, such as Arduino programming and NeoPixel control tutorials.
The 2023 IoT4Community workshop placed a special emphasis on encouraging the participation of future female engineers, supported by the IEEE STEM Grant 2023 and IEEE TryEngineering.
With 29 participants, mainly secondary school students, the workshop was interactive and well-received. Participants valued the practical learning approach and the insights from professionals. The session's clarity and the provided resources for additional study were highly commended.
Dr. Mark Tee Kit Tsun, an IEEE Member and staff at Swinburne Sarawak, conducted the workshop, supported by students from the IEEE Swinburne Sarawak Student Branch and members of the Swinburne Computer Science and Robotics Clubs.
