IEEE Innovation Nation Sri Lanka (INSL) is an island-wide competition held during Global Entrepreneurship Week to support young and enthusiastic innovators in the country. The event aims to promote innovation and entrepreneurship among students, providing them with a platform to showcase their ideas and talents. Through workshops and competitions, INSL encourages participants to develop their entrepreneurial skills, foster creativity, and engage with real-world challenges.

The fifth workshop of IEEE Innovation Nation Sri Lanka (INSL) Uva Province was conducted on 5th January 2024, featuring a keynote session by Mr Deepal Samarakoon, lecturer affiliated to department of Computer Science and Informatics of Uva Wellassa University. The event drew participation from approximately 100 undergraduate members from the university, along with teams preparing for the INSL competitions.

Overall, the workshop served as a valuable learning opportunity for participants, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge to excel in the INSL competitions and beyond.

The session on "Art of Leading a Successful Startup: Learning to Lead" was a transformative 1 hour and 20-minute session starting from 6:10 p.m. Mr. Deepal Samarakoon, a distinguished lecturer affiliated with the Department of Computer Science and Informatics at Uva Wellassa University and a part-time entrepreneur, delivered an inspiring keynote address. The session focused on the essential aspects of starting and leading a business, emphasizing that successful leadership is not exclusive to full-time entrepreneurs but also relevant to those balancing other commitments.

Attendees, including participants from both the idea and business stages of the INSL competition, gained valuable insights into effective leadership practices. Mr. Samarakoon shared practical strategies for navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship and maintaining momentum in business ventures. Biography:

Mr. Deepal Samarakoon is a dedicated professional with a diverse background in academia and software engineering. He served as a Lecturer (Probationary) at the Department of Computer Science & Informatics, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Uva Wellassa University from 2020 to 2021. During his tenure, he was a member of the Student Engagement and Retention (SER) team and contributed to the AHEAD project, focusing on advancing higher education opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Mr. Samarakoon's commitment to academic development extended to his role as a development team member for the faculty website of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Uva Wellassa University. He also served as an organizing committee member for the first Online Hackathon competition, "EngHack 2020," under the AHEAD Project, demonstrating his passion for fostering innovation and collaboration among students.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Mr. Samarakoon has contributed to the field of education as a Demonstrator (Temporary) at the Department of Computer Science & Informatics, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Uva Wellassa University from 2019 to 2020. He has also shared his knowledge as a Visiting Lecturer at the Department of Information Technology of SLIATE – Badulla in 2019, enriching the learning experiences of students outside his primary academic affiliation.

Furthermore, Mr. Samarakoon has valuable industry experience, having served as a Software Engineering Intern at Creative Software from 2018 to 2019. This experience has equipped him with practical insights into software development processes and methodologies, enhancing his ability to bridge the gap between academia and industry.
