Shannon Meets Carnot: A Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics
Dr. Ori Shental (Bell Labs, Nokia, Crawford Hill, NJ) will give a presentation on the generalization of the second thermodynamic law using Shannon-theoretic measures at Bell Laboratories, Nokia, in Murray Hill, NJ. The meeting will be held in Room 6A-106, which is located near the main entrance behind the Bell Labs Showcase exhibition area. It is necessary to register as a visitor to access this area, and therefore it is important for non-Nokia participants to register well beforehand using VTOOLS.
Everyone is welcome to attend this meeting.
Please register in advance for this meeting using VTOOLS to provide the meeting organizers an accurate head count. You can change/cancel the registration if your plans change.

Shannon Meets Carnot: A Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics
Abstract - The classical thermodynamic laws fail to capture the behavior of systems with the energy Hamiltonian being an explicit function of the temperature. Such a Hamiltonian arises, for example, in modeling information processing systems, like communication channels, as thermal systems. We generalize the second thermodynamic law to encompass systems with temperature-dependent energy levels. This generalization makes it possible to express, among other Shannon-theoretic measures, the mutual information of the Gaussian channel as a consequence of the most fundamental laws of nature -- the laws of thermodynamics.
This is joint work with Prof. Ido Kanter, Physics Department, Bar-Ilan University, Israel.
Biography:
Dr. Ori Shental is a member of technical staff at Bell Labs, Nokia, in Crawford Hill, NJ. He is especially interested in the utilization of powerful solution methods from a variety of well-established scientific disciplines, like probabilistic inference in graphical models, machine learning, convex optimization and statistical mechanics into problems in quite diverse aspects of information processing, such as information theory, communications, error-correcting codes, storage and signal processing.
