Dr. Dmitry Chizhik (Bell Labs, Nokia, Crawford Hill, NJ) will give a presentation on an accurate field model requiring minimal map data for guiding and diffusion in streets and buildings,  at Bell Laboratories, Nokia, in Murray Hill, NJ. The meeting will be held in Room 6A-106, which is located near the main entrance behind the Bell Labs Showcase exhibition area. It is necessary to register as a visitor to access this area, and therefore it is important for non-Nokia participants to register well beforehand using VTOOLS.

Everyone is welcome to attend this meeting.

Please register in advance for this meeting using VTOOLS to provide the meeting organizers an accurate head count. You can change/cancel the registration if your plans change.

Topic:

An Accurate Field Model Requiring Minimal Map Data for Guiding and Diffusion in Streets and Buildings

Abstract - The theory of normal mode propagation in a line-of-sight street scenario is extended to include propagation into buildings through coupling to a diffuse indoor field. This combination of propagation in deterministic and random media retains important aspects of both. Signal strength predictions are in close agreement with measurements, producing 2 dB and 3.5 dB root-mean-square model-data difference, in line-of-sight and outdoor-indoor scenarios, respectively. The full 3D field model predicts actual signal directions and antenna correlations as a function of range, important for evaluating performance of directional antennas and spatial diversity. Only minimal description of the environment is needed, i.e., street width and representative building wall properties, without any interior details.

Biography:

Dr. Dmitry Chzhik is a member of technical staff at Bell Laboratories, Nokia, in Crawford Hill, NJ. He received a Ph.D. in Electrophysics at the Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, NY. His thesis work has been in ultrasonics and non-destructive evaluation. He joined the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, New London, CT, where he did research in scattering from ocean floor, geoacoustic modeling of porous media and shallow water acoustic propagation. In 1996 he has joined Bell Laboratories, working on radio propagation modeling and measurements, using deterministic and statistical techniques. He has worked on measurement, modeling and channel estimation of MIMO channels. The results are used both for determination of channel-imposed bounds on channel capacity, system performance, as well as for optimal antenna array design. His recent work has included mm wave propagation modeling, system and link simulations of satellite and femto cell radio communications that included all aspects of the physical layer. His research interests are in acoustic and electromagnetic wave propagation, signal processing, communications, radar, sonar, medical imaging.
