You are invited to the Southern Alberta Section's 2017 Annual General Meeting.  The meeting will provide an update on the activities of the Section, the Technical Chapters and the Affinity Groups over the past year, and provide an outlook for activities planned in 2018.

Dr. Ken Barker, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Calgary, will deliver the keynote speech, "Privacy Implications of the Internet of Things".

Privacy Implications of the Internet of Things
Big data analytics promises to bring many benefits including increased security, safety, insight, and understanding about how to best support highly valued public services. Conversely, such analytics could be used to violate inappropriately individual privacy that could bring both immediate harm and cause long-term unintended consequences unless the data is secured and protected. With the emergence of the Internet of Things, the volume of data that will be subject to analysis will increase many times over. The nature of the data will also change because these devices will capture a wide-range of human activities that could be linked to individual behaviours through deep analytices. This talk will discuss how personal privacy is at risk now and how the introduction of the IoT complicates and expands related concerns.

Biography:

Ken Barker is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Calgary. He holds a Ph.D. in Computing Science from the University of Alberta (1990); and has more than two decades of experience working with industrial computer systems and has consulting experience in the design of commercial databases. He has interest in system integration, distributed systems, and the privacy and security of data repositories. His research interests have also included mobile data systems, object-oriented database systems, bioinformatics and heterogeneous systems. He has served as the Dean of the Faculty of Science and as the Department Head of Computer Science at the University of Calgary.  He is the Past President of the Canadian Association of Computer Science (CACS/AIC) and has served on the Computer Science Accreditation Council. As the director of research laboratories at the Universities of Calgary and Manitoba he has supervised over 60 graduate students, in addition to several post-docs and research assistants. Dr. Barker has published over 200 peer reviewed publications in areas such as distributed systems, software engineering, transaction systems, simulations, spatial database systems, social networks, geographical information systems, astro-informatics, privacy and security.
