From June 20-21, 2024, the IEEE Student Branch at Jaypee University of Information Technology (JUIT), Solan, Himachal Pradesh, organized a two-day hands-on workshop on 3D Printing Technology. Held in the ECL8 lab, this workshop aimed to enhance the technical skills and knowledge of the university's lab staff regarding 3D printing technologies. Dr. Vikas Baghel from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was the principal resource person for this event.

Objective and Aim:

The primary aim of the workshop was to familiarize the lab staff with the concepts and importance of 3D printing technology. It sought to impart practical knowledge and innovative ideas in 3D printing techniques, encouraging creativity and proficiency in this evolving field. A total of 20 lab staff members from various departments participated in the workshop.

Detailed Schedule and Content

Day 1: June 20, 2024 (Thursday)

- 10:00 AM - Introduction to 3D Printing and Basic Operations
  - History and Evolution of 3D Printing: Dr. Baghel started with an overview of how 3D printing technology has developed over time, tracing its origins and advancements.
  - 3D Printing Workflow: The session covered the step-by-step process involved in 3D printing, from design to final product.
  - Types of 3D Printing Technologies: Different technologies used in 3D printing, including FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling), SLA (Stereolithography), and SLS (Selective Laser Sintering), were discussed.
  - Materials Used in 3D Printing: Various materials such as PLA, ABS, and resin were examined for their properties and applications.
  - Applications of 3D Printing: The workshop explored diverse applications of 3D printing in industries such as healthcare, automotive, and consumer goods.
  - Challenges and Limitations of 3D Printing: Common challenges such as material constraints, design limitations, and technical issues were addressed.
  - Components of a 3D Printer: A detailed look at the Bambu Lab X1E 3D printer was provided, focusing on its main components and their functions.

- 03:00 PM - AMS: Fundamentals and Functionality
  - AMS Components: An introduction to the Automated Material System (AMS), including its components and their roles.
  - AMS Feeding System: Detailed explanation of how the AMS feeding system works.
  - Main Functions of AMS: Key functions of the AMS, such as automatic filament management and loading, were demonstrated.
  - AMS Setup and Filament Loading: Practical session on setting up the AMS and loading filament into the system.
  - Safety Precautions and Best Practices: Emphasis was placed on safety measures and best practices for handling 3D printing equipment and materials.

Day 2: June 21, 2024 (Friday)

- 10:00 AM - Filaments: Types, Properties, and Uses
  - Supported Filament Types: Overview of various filament types supported by 3D printers, including PLA, ABS, PETG, and others.
  - Filament Selection Properties: Criteria for choosing the right filament based on properties like strength, flexibility, and temperature resistance.
  - Filament Drying: Techniques for drying filaments to prevent issues such as moisture absorption.
  - 3D Printer Temperature Settings: Instructions on setting appropriate temperatures for different filaments during printing.

  - 3D Modeling Basics
    - Slicing Software Introduction (Bambu Studio): Introduction to Bambu Studio software used for slicing 3D models for printing.
    - Basic 3D Modeling Technique: Fundamentals of creating 3D models from scratch.
    - Hands-on Session: Creating Simple 3D Models: Participants engaged in a hands-on activity to create basic 3D models.
    - Hands-on Session: Preparing Models for Printing: Practical session on preparing and optimizing models for the printing process.

- 03:00 PM - Advanced Printing Techniques & Projects
  - Multi-material Printing: Techniques for printing with multiple materials to create complex and functional objects.
  - Using Supports and Rafts Effectively: Methods for using supports and rafts to enhance the quality of 3D prints.
  - Hands-on Session: Group Projects: Collaborative projects where participants applied their knowledge to create 3D-printed prototypes.
  - Creating Prototypes: Guidance on developing prototypes for various applications.
  - Project Demonstration: Presentation of the prototypes created during the hands-on session.
  - Feedback Session: Collecting feedback from participants on the workshop's effectiveness and areas for improvement.

### Conclusion

The workshop successfully met its objectives by providing the lab staff with a comprehensive understanding of 3D printing technologies. It included theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and hands-on experience with 3D printing equipment and techniques. The diverse range of topics covered, from basic concepts to advanced techniques, ensured that participants were well-equipped to apply 3D printing technology in their respective fields.

The interactive sessions, practical demonstrations, and collaborative projects fostered an environment of learning and creativity. The feedback collected indicated a positive reception of the workshop's content and delivery, highlighting the effectiveness of the sessions in meeting the educational goals.
