Topic:

Impact of Solar Storm on Electric Grid

Recent news headlines have captivated audiences with stunning images of auroras, a mesmerizing display caused by solar activity. While these celestial spectacles are awe-inspiring, they mask a more critical concern: the potential for Geo-Magnetic Disturbances (GMDs) to wreak havoc on the electric grid. This seminar will explore the historical impact of GMDs in North America, highlighting their potential to induce harmful currents in transformers and the grid. The presentation will delve into the need for GMD monitoring and mitigation strategies, current regulatory frameworks, including NERC EOP 010-1, FERC Order 830, and NERC TPL-007-2. Additionally, the seminar will examine emerging technologies and modeling approaches for addressing GMD risks. By understanding the challenges and available solutions, we can better prepare for the increasing threat of GMDs to our critical infrastructure.
