Robotics & Its Practical Use in Industry

The Department of Robotics & Automation, JSSATE, Bengaluru, in association with IEEE Student Branch Chapter (IEEE-SBC65781), organized an insightful talk on "Robotics & Its Practical Use in Industry" on January 24, 2023. The event, held in the Seminar Hall (B-Block) from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, featured Dr. Abhra Roy Chowdhury, a distinguished lecturer and Head of the Robotics Innovation Lab at CPDM, IISc, Bengaluru. The session saw active participation from 40 students and was coordinated by Dr. Ramya M V, HOD, and K S Mahesh, Assistant Professor.

Dr. Abhra Roy Chowdhury began his talk by introducing students to the basics of robotics and its evolution over the years. He emphasized the significance of robotics in modern industry and its revolutionary impact on manufacturing and production processes. He discussed various applications of robotics across multiple industries, including automobile, aerospace, agriculture, and medical fields.

The students learned about different robot components, such as sensors, actuators, control systems, and power supplies, understanding their roles and interactions in producing desired outputs. Dr. Chowdhury explained the types of robots commonly used in industry—industrial, service, and humanoid robots—and delved into the practical aspects of robotics, including programming, control systems, and sensing technologies.

Hands-on demonstrations were provided, showcasing how to program robots for specific tasks and implement control algorithms to manage their movements. Dr. Chowdhury also highlighted the challenges engineers face in designing and implementing robotic systems and shared strategies to overcome these obstacles.

The session concluded with a Q&A segment, where students engaged with Dr. Chowdhury to clarify their doubts and gain deeper insights. Overall, the talk was a great success, enriching students' understanding of the latest developments in robotics and automation, and their practical applications in the industry.
