As synchronous generators continue to be replaced by inverter-interfaced renewable energy resources to pave the way for grid decarbonization, the dynamic behavior of the bulk power grid is changing. In the past few years, system operators with high levels of inverter-based resource (IBR) deployment in their footprints have reported increased occurrences of dynamic performance issues and forced oscillations. Such experiences have motivated numerous model-based studies to anticipate stability issues in the evolving grid with high IBR penetration. Advanced time-synchronized measurements (synchrophasors and synchrowaveforms) are key in complementing these studies that may not faithfully recreate interactions among synchronous resources and heterogeneous inverter fleets. In this talk, we will provide a brief overview of how high-resolution time-synchronized measurements have been used to diagnose IBR performance issues with wide-area reliability implications, how they can be effectively used in conjunction with model-based studies, and some future research directions.
