Dr. Peter Spector

Topic:

Mapping Cardiac Arrhythmias

In this lecture we will discuss cardiac mapping, in which physicians can place multi-electrode, transvenous catheters into the human heart, record electrical activity and identify the drivers responsible for abnormal cardiac rhythms. These maps help physicians determine where to deliver energy (via transvenous catheters) to cure arrhythmias. This can all be accomplished without the need for scalpels or stitches. We will discuss the nature of cardiac mapping with a focus on the engineering hurdles to accurately identifying the sources of arrhythmias. We will focus on a specific example, reviewing the approach of Dr. Spector's company, CoreMap, which has developed a novel mapping system for treating the most complex of cardiac arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation.

Biography:

Dr. Spector is a practicing cardiac electrophysiologist, focused on mapping and ablation with a particular emphasis on atrial fibrillation. He has split his time over the last 2.5 decades between clinical care, teaching and research. He is the Director of Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University of Vermont Medical Center and is a professor in the department of Medicine and in the department of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering. He has published dozens of papers in the medical literature and is the sole author of two books about cardiac electrophysiology and atrial fibrillation. He is the inventor, founder and president of VisibleEP, a company focused on computational modeling of cardiac electrophysiology. He is also the inventor, co-founder and chief science officer of CoreMap a complete 3D electro-anatomic mapping system for identifying sources of atrial fibrillation to help physician's cure AF.
