Description:

IEEE TEMS DELHI Chapter technically supported Lecture on ‘Quality and Reliability of Contact Lines’ held on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 1800 hrs, at India international Centre -Annexe

Lecture Room-I, Lodhi Road New Delhi-110003. This Technical event, was supported by three other leading technical societies i.e., Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) and Institution of Railway Electrical Engineers (IREE).The event was presided over by Er N. Venkatesan, Ex. Member, Electrical, Railway Board and Ex Officio Secretary to Govt of India. The conference was addressed by Er V K Dutt, Chair, IEEE TEMS, Delhi, Er Devendra Gill, Chairman, IE (I)/DSC, Er Dayal Dogra, Chief Electrical Engineer / Northern Railway and Secretary General IREE, Er N Venkatesan, Past Chairman, IET/DLN and Ex. Member, Railway Board. The vote of thanks was accorded by Er Ashish Shrivastava, Secy, IET/DLN.

In his Lecture Dr.-Eng. Axel Schmieder, Siemens Expert for Contact Lines, Siemens Ltd covered various technical issues on Overhead Contact Lines (OCL) pertaining to the Quality and Reliability aspects. He said that even though there are only 1% of the Total failures in the Railway Systems on OCL problems these account for 7% of the detentions. Out of theses 50% failures could be avoided and in case of balance 50 % the negative consequences could be decreased by monitoring. He explained the statement by example of Pantograph damage on High speed in German Railways with recordings made by High Speed and High Resolution Cameras. He suggested following six point strategy for mitigating the OCL problems.

1. Skilled Experience and Motivated Staff.

2. Knowing and fulfilling necessary requirements. These include IEC, EN and BIS Standards, Electrical, Mechanical and Environmental Requirement. Special operational requirements.

3. Tools for Research, Design & testing. This include testing in labs, test centres, Factories and at Railway lines. OCS- Pantograph simulation.

4. Components and Systems compliant with all technical requirements.

5. Professional project Management and installation.

6. Long time service. This include Diagnostics and monitoring and service according to the maintenance plan.

The lecture session was followed by Technical interaction .Questions by Er Sudeh Kumar Ex Member Electrical Railway Board on use of Composite material contact wire. The speaker referred to Japanese practice of use of Composite material contact line along with use of steel pantograph Strips, While German and French practice is to use Magnesium and Tin alloys respectively with Graphite pantograph strips which have given life up to 100 years of Contact Lines. Questions by Er Satish Kumar Ex Director Electrical DMRC on use of Maintenance free Components with long life, the speaker referred to his work as member of IEC 9 committee on Standards. Questions of Er N. Venkatesan Ex Member Electrical Railway Board and Er V K Dutt, Ex. additional Member Electrical Railway Board, on Energy Efficiency studies on Electric Traction and possibilities of Narrow Gauge were also discussed.

The Speaker Dr.-Eng. Axel Schmieder holds PhD in Railway Electrification and University (Hons) degree in Transportation, Electrical and Mechanical engineering. He is Siemens Expert for Contact Lines (1995), German Railway Authority Expert for Electrification (2001), Siemens Auditor for Quality Management, Senior Engineer (2003), Siemens Key Expert (2010). Apart from Many articles in journals and presentations at conferences his following two publications have become reference material in the subject of Electric Traction for Researchers, Designers, maintainers and Operators in the Field of Electric Traction world over.

1. Contact Lines for Electric Railways, Teubner/Publicis (German, English, Chinese, Spanish editions, 1200 pages, co-author).

2. Power Supply for Electric Railways, Teubner (German edition, 728 pages, co-author)
