Overview

The IEEE SIGHT JUIT Student Branch and the Environment, Ecology, and Health Club (JYC) organized a successful workshop on organ donation awareness. The event, conducted in collaboration with the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO), HP, and the Rotary Club Shimla Hill Queens, aimed to educate participants on the critical significance of organ donation, its medical implications, and its potential to save lives.

Participants

Approximately 200 attendees, including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year B.Tech students, faculty, and staff members, participated in the event. The workshop was also graced by Prof. Rajendra Kumar Sharma (Vice Chancellor), Prof. Ashok Kumar Gupta (Dean of Academics & Research), Maj Gen Rakesh Bassi (Retd.) (Registrar and Dean of Students), Brig. Raj Kumar Sharma SM (Retd.) (Registrar and Dean of Students (designate)), department heads, media publicity in-charge, and other faculty members. Representatives from Rotary Club Shimla Hill Queens, including Ms. Mala Singh (President), Ms. Ruchira Tangri (Assistant Governor Zone-1), Ms. Aruna Sharma (Vice President), Ms. Taruna Kaushal (Club Secretary), Ms. Geeta Kapoor (Public Image Chair), Ms. Manjusha Pathania (Director), Ms. Sunita Jain (Member), Ms. Gurpreet Sondh (Executive Secretary), and Mr. Naresh from SOTTO were also in attendance.

Guest Speaker: Prof. Puneet Mahajan

The event featured Prof. Puneet Mahajan from the Department of Surgery at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, as the guest speaker. With extensive experience and expertise in surgery and organ transplantation, Prof. Mahajan delivered an enlightening session on the critical aspects of organ donation.

Key Highlights

1. Significance of Organ Donation:
   Prof. Mahajan shed light on the acute shortage of organs available for transplantation and the urgent need to increase awareness about organ donation. He discussed how organ donation has the potential to save lives and significantly improve the quality of life for those suffering from end-stage organ failure.

2. Medical Implications:
   The workshop provided a comprehensive understanding of the medical procedures involved in organ donation and transplantation. Prof. Mahajan elaborated on the medical criteria for becoming an organ donor, the process of organ retrieval, and the preservation techniques that ensure organs remain viable for transplantation.

3. Role of State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO):
   The collaboration with SOTTO HP was emphasized as a pivotal step in advancing the organ donation landscape in Himachal Pradesh. SOTTO HP plays a crucial role in coordinating organ and tissue transplantation activities, promoting public awareness, and ensuring ethical practices in organ donation.

4. Community Engagement:
   The workshop underscored the significance of community engagement in promoting organ donation. The involvement of the Rotary Club Shimla Hill Queens was instrumental in reaching a broader audience and fostering a culture of compassion and social responsibility.

5. Interactive Session:
   The presentation was followed by an interactive session where participants had the chance to ask questions and engage in meaningful discussions. This session allowed attendees to clarify doubts and misconceptions regarding organ donation, thereby encouraging more informed decisions.
