With the growing functionalities and therefore increase usage of digital signal processors and microprocessors in communication, computing, and consumer electronic devices, the analog chips are also growing significantly to condition and convert the “real world” analog signals into digital domains. Power management is at the center of this extraordinary revolution making it possible to extend battery-life of portable devices, such as cellular phones and other handheld devices to support a multitude of extended functionalities. Furthermore, the drive for energy-efficient devices in home entertainment systems, TVs, automotive applications, etc. necessitates use of smart and intelligent power management devices. This seminar will review key design challenges and multi-disciplinary approach needed to design power-management ICs, for key cell-phone and computing components. Recent advances in energy-efficient technologies such as energy harvesting, etc. will also be discussed.

Biography: Dr. Biranchinath Sahu received B.E. from Sambalpur University, Orissa, in 1997,
M.Tech.(Electrical Engineering) from IIT Kanpur in 2000, and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA,in 2004.

He is currently working as an IC Design Manager in the Computing Power Management
team at Texas Instruments India responsible for design and development of
next-generation power management ICs for advanced mobile CPUs and graphics
processors. His research interests are in the area of analog and mixed-signal
circuits and systems design, more specifically, energy-efficient, power-aware
systems and circuits.
