The webinar on “Powering Tomorrow: Opportunities for Young Graduates in the Energy Industry” covered various aspects of the modern power industry and its connections to technology integration, renewable and clean energy, transportation electrification, grid modernization, and demand management. The speaker highlighted key areas of opportunity, including renewable energy, energy storage, smart grids, digitalization, sustainable energy solutions, and innovative technologies and research.

 

The presentation also focused on the necessary skills and competencies, including technical and soft skills. Technical skills covered software and platforms such as PCB design (Altium, Eagle), power converter design (LTSpice, MATLAB, Simulink, PSCAD), DSP programming, FPGA for converter control, LabVIEW for user interface development, and PLC coding for industrial automation. The platforms discussed included embedded systems like DSP microcontrollers (TI, ARM), FPGA (Xilinx), Raspberry Pi, Arduino, DSpace, and hardware-in-loop systems (RTDS, Opel RT, Typhoon HAL).

 

Soft skills emphasized the importance of communication, clarity of thought, situational awareness, and professional etiquette. The speaker referenced the “Future of Jobs Report 2023” by the World Economic Forum and emphasized the need for continuous learning through resources like NPTEL, Coursera, Udemy, research papers, and websites. Career paths discussed included internships, higher education, industry positions, consultancy, and entrepreneurship. The speaker also stressed the importance of building a strong portfolio, keeping resumes concise, and networking.

 

The session concluded with a Q&A, followed by a virtual memento presentation and a vote of thanks by Cindy, who also anchored the entire event. Opening remarks were given by Dr. P. Tripura, Chair of the IEEE Hyderabad Section IES Chapter.

Biography:

Dr. M V Satya Sai Chandra, born in Srikakulam, India, in 1993, earned his B.Tech. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from JNTU Vizianagaram in 2014. He completed his M.Tech. in Instrumentation and Control Systems from the National Institute of Technology Calicut in 2017. In July 2024, he obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar. Since August 2023, Dr. Sai Chandra has been working as an R&D Engineer at Hitachi Energy in Bangalore. His research focuses on fault-tolerant control applications, advanced control of DC microgrids, and energy management of DC microgrids.
