Abstract:
Lightning and thunder are among the most fascinating visual and auditory displays on Earth. Surprisingly, these phenomena are still poorly understood. For the first time, we present images of the acoustic signatures generated by individual return strokes from artificially triggered lightning. The acoustic camera comprises a linear array of 15 microphones (equally spaced, 1 meter apart) and situated 95 meters from the lightning channel. Experiments took place at the International Center for Lightning Research and Testing in Camp Blanding, FL during the summer of 2014. The microphone array was positioned in an endfired orientation so that the peak acoustic reception pattern can be steered vertically along the channel with a frequency-dependent spatial resolution.
In this talk, I will first review our current understanding of the lightning discharge and thunder generation processes. I will then describe the acoustic camera and the experimental setup and details. Finally, I will present the acoustic images of the lightning channel and compare them with optical photographs of the same event. I will also discuss the implications of these results on advancing our understanding of the lightning phenomena.

Biography:
Dr. Maher Dayeh is a senior research scientist in the Space Science and Engineering Division at Southwest Research Institute. He has worked and published in diverse research areas in space and atmospheric physics. His current research interests include heliospheric and magnetospheric physics, thunderstorm microphysics, and the development of novel radiation and particle detectors. He has authored/co-authored over 68 refereed publications in relevant topics and presented numerous contributed talks/posters at national and international conferences and workshops. He is affiliated with the American Geophysical Union, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Physics Honor Society-Sigma Pi Sigma.
