Event Name: Expert Edge by Ms. Simran Khokha
Organized by: IEEE SPS BMSIT in association with IEEE SPS Bangalore Section
Date & Time: 17th August 2024, 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Speaker: Simran Khokha, Product and Strategy Manager, Infineon Technologies, Germany

The webinar, "Expert Edge," aimed at giving third-year engineering students an in-depth understanding of the roles and career paths within the semiconductor industry. Ms. Simran Khokha, the speaker, began by introducing the semiconductor life cycle, which encompasses design, frontend, backend, and assembly processes. She elaborated on the specific roles within these segments:

  • Frontend Roles: System Architect, RTL Design Engineer, Functional Verification Engineer, STA Engineer, Design for Functionality Engineer
  • Backend Roles: Physical Design Engineer, Process Engineer, Product Engineer, Process Integration Engineer

Ms. Simran further discussed the skills required to excel in these roles, particularly for front-end positions such as knowledge of embedded processor architecture, programming (C/C++), and IC design (RTL coding with Verilog/VHDL). For back-end positions, she emphasized physical design flow knowledge, scripting languages, and industry-standard tools. Additionally, roles in software development and test development were highlighted, focusing on relevant skills in programming, wireless communication, and embedded systems.

Ms. Simran also shared a Semiconductor Major Selection Guide for Indian undergraduates, outlining the educational progression from a Diploma to a Ph.D., where each level provides unique opportunities for industry entry, specialization, or research.

The session covered various engineering disciplines' relevance to the semiconductor field, including ECE, EEE, Material Science, and Computer Engineering. The speaker Simran touched on the global shortage of skilled workers in the semiconductor sector, with significant deficits in the U.S., Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Korea. She also advised students on international career opportunities, highlighting key factors like work culture, language barriers, visa requirements, and growth potential.
