The IEEE Alabama Section eagerly anticipates an illuminating presentation by Dr. Plamen Doynov, CTO, EMP Shield, Inc. on "Building Resilience of the Electrical Grid to EMP and GMD".

It is essential to build resilience of the electrical power grid and all interdependent critical infrastructure segments to large scale natural events, such as coronal mass ejection (CME) and geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) and technology generated electro-magnetic interference (EMI), such as high altitude nuclear electromagnetic pulse (HEMP). The sources of EMP are referenced and presented with environment and test standards with their evolution and use for development of protection and mitigation utilities. Established resilience definitions and processes are presented and their guiding principles towards building resilience to critical infrastructure. 5R Resilience is presented based on Robustness, Redundancy, Resourcefulness, Response, and Recovery strategic principles. The design of EMP mitigation technology and devices is discussed for AC and DC power and communication networks.

Building Resilience of the Electrical Grid to EMP and GMD

Biography:

Personal Statement
I have dedicated my professional career to the application of science and technology for the betterment of humanity.

Dr. Plamen Doynov is the Chief Technology Officer of EMP Shield, Inc., leading the development of innovative solutions for countermeasures and mitigation techniques for intentional electromagnetic interference and nuclear EMP. Plamen’s doctoral pursuit in Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering was completed at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he is currently an Adjunct Research Professor. He is supporting internal projects, and SBIRs/STTRs (US Navy, US AF, DARPA, etc.) based on diverse expertise and experience in engineering, computer sciences, and telecommunications, forging a unique perspective on interdisciplinary technological solutions from long-range biometrics and hyperspectral forensic analysis to directed energy counter-UAV measures and practical applications of ML/AI.

As a Principal Engineer at MRI Global (Kansas City), Plamen was key personnel in multiple CBRNE projects (chem-, bio-, radioactive, nuclear, and explosives). His work resulted in multiple successfully executed projects and programs (US Army, DoE, DoD, Boeing, DITRA, etc.), publications and patents. He is also a judge for the R&D Magazine annual “Top 100 awards” and the Design Magazine annual LEAP Award.

Complementing his formal education is Dr. Doynov's commitment to lifelong learning. He is a PMP and is continuously engaged in SBIRs, STTRs, technology working groups, and online education, completing multiple courses and acquiring multiple certifications in areas such as ML/AI, system integration and interoperability, hardware and software embedded systems, data sciences, sensors and actuators, IoT, digital signal and image processing, machine vision. Doynov is author and coauthor of multiple publications and patents.
