IEEE and IEEE AP-S: Key Activities and the Inauguration of IEEE PUST AP-S SBC

The Honorable President of IEEE AP-S will address the core activities of IEEE and the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S), focusing on their role in advancing technology for humanity and fostering innovation in antenna and propagation sciences. Additionally, the talk will mark the inauguration of the IEEE PUST AP-S Student Branch Chapter (SBC), highlighting the chapter's importance for PUST in encouraging research, collaboration, and student involvement in cutting-edge developments within the field of antennas and propagation under the IEEE AP-S umbrella.

Biography:

Branislav M. Notaros is a Professor of ECE, Director of Electromagnetics Laboratory, and University Distinguished Teaching Scholar at Colorado State University. Previously, he held assistant/associate-professor positions at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and University of Belgrade. His research contributions are in computational electromagnetics (CEM), higher order methods, all sorts of CEM methodologies, techniques, implementations, and applications, adaptive refinement, uncertainty quantification, in-situ and remote sensing of precipitation, MRI-RF antennas/coils, EM/antennas/systems for biomedical applications, and electromagnetics education. His research has been supported by about 20 major NSF, DoD, NASA, and NIH grants. His publications include nearly 300 book chapters, journal articles, and conference papers, and textbooks “Electromagnetics” (2010) and “MATLAB-Based Electromagnetics” (2013) with Pearson Prentice Hall and “Conceptual Electromagnetics” (2017) with CRC Press.  

Prof. Notaros is Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and of the Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES). He serves as General Chair of the 2022 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and USNC-URSI National Radio Science Meeting and served as General Chair of the 2018 International Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society Symposium. He is Track Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. He serves as President of ACES, Chair of the US National Committee Commission B of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI), and member of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Administrative Committee. He was the recipient of the 2005 IEEE MTT-S Microwave Prize, 1999 IEE Marconi Premium, 2019 ACES Technical Achievement Award, 1999 URSI Young Scientist Award, 2005 UMass Dartmouth Scholar of the Year Award, 2012 CSU System Board of Governors Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award, 2014 and 2018 CSU Provost’s N. Preston Davis Award for Instructional Innovation, 2012 IEEE Region 5 Outstanding Engineering Educator Award, 2014 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Colorado Professor of the Year Award, 2015 American Society for Engineering Education ECE Distinguished Educator Award, and 2015 IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award.

Biography:

Ajay K. Poddar (SM 2005, Fellow 2015) is an IEEE Fellow, working as a Chief Scientist at Synergy Microwave, NJ, USA, responsible for design and development of signal generation and signal processing electronics for industrial, medical, space applications. He is also serving as a visiting professor in University of Oradea, Romania, Indian Institute of Technology Jammu, India, and guest lecturer in Technical University Munich, Germany. Ajay Poddar graduated from IIT-Delhi, India; Doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) from Technical University Berlin, Germany; Post Doctorate (Dr.-Ing. habil) from Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus, Germany. He has received over dozen awards and 30 plus patents for technological innovations and leaderships, published 250 plus scientific papers in journals, magazine, and conference proceedings, co-authored 4-technical books/chapters. For the past 30 years, he has been serving in several scientific committee, professional societies, and voluntary organizations. He has served as elected Members-at Large AdCom member of IEEE MTT-S and AdCom Member of IEEE AP-S. Currently, he is serving as a Region-1 Coordinator MTT-S MGA, MTT-S SIGHT Committee Member, MTT-S Inter-Society Committee Member, Chair of IEEE HAC Society Partnership Engagement Working Group, Chair of IEEE AP-S Chapter Activity Committee, Co-Chair of IEEE AP-S COPE (Committee on Promoting Equality), Chair of IEEE AP-S Inter-Society Committee and Chair of IEEE North Jersey Section.

Biography:

Celia Shahnaz, SMIEEE, Fellow IEB, received Ph.D. degree from Concordia University, Canada and is currently a professor at, Department of EEE, BUET, Bangladesh since 2015. She was the winner of Canadian Common Scholarship for pursuing her Ph.D study in Canada and recipient of Bangladesh Academy of Science Gold Medal for her contributions in science and technology. The World Academy of Science (TWAS) members have elected her as a Fellow of TWAS for the advancement of science in developing countries, effective 1 January 2023. Recently, her nomination has been approved and she has been inducted into IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu as a Professional Member into the Eta Chapter of the Board of Governors. She has been elected as 2022 IEEE WIE Committee Chair-Elect and she is serving as the 2023-2024 IEEE WIE Committee Chair. Biography:

Dr. M. Moshiul Hoque is a professor in the Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering and Director of CUET IT Business Incubator at Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology (CUET). He was head of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering and Dean of the Faculty of Electrical & Computer Engineering, CUET. Dr. Hoque, with a Ph. D in Information & Computer Sciences from Saitama University (Japan), M.Sc. Engg. in CSE from BUET and B. Sc. Engg. in EEE from CUET, respectively, is the founding director of CUET Natural Language Processing (NLP) Lab. Currently, Dr. Hoque is acting as the Chair of the IEEE Bangladesh Section. He also worked as the head of the self-assessment committee (Department of CSE, CUET) and as the sub-project manager to establish a Fab lab in CUET funded by the World Bank under HEQEP, UGC. Mr. Hoque is working as an Expert Member of the evaluation committee at the Board of Accreditation of Engineering & Technology Education (BAETE), Bangladesh. His research works received several grants from the ICT Division, Bangladesh High Tech Park Authority, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, Ulster University (UK), Athabasca University (Canada), York University (Canada), and La Trobe University (Australia). Dr. Hoque's academic excellence is not only extensive but also internationally recognized. His publication record boasts over 230 papers in various International Journals and Conferences. His research works have been acknowledged and awarded at several international conferences, including HIS 2011, EICT 2013, IEMIS 2018, ICO 2019, ICIoTCT 2020, CONSTRAINT-AAAI 2021, ICCIT 2022, and IEEE WIECON-ECE 2022. Notably, one of his works received the Champion Award at the Digital Innovation Fair 2016 at the Division & District Level and secured the 2nd prize in a national-level competition in the Solve-a-Thon Category. Dr. Hoque's expertise is further demonstrated through his active role as a reviewer in several reputable journals and conferences, such as IEEE Access, Journal of Soft Computing, IEEE/ACM HRI, IEEE/RSJ IROS, and more. Mohammed Moshiul Hoque is not just a member, but an active participant in several activities of IEEE. His role as an IEEE volunteer and his service in several positions of IEEE Bangladesh Section (BDS) and Technical Society Chapters as an Excom member demonstrate his dedication and commitment. He has served as the IEEE BDS Vice-chair (Technical) for the years 2019 and 2020, Conference Coordinator (2018), Award Coordinator (2017), Award Coordinator & Vice-chair (Activity) of the IEEE CS Bangladesh Chapter, and Educational Activity Coordinator (2017-19) of IEEE RAS Bangladesh Chapter. Moreover, he has served as the IEEE CUET SB, RAS/SPS CUET Chapter, and WIE Affinity Group from 2019-2021 as an advisor. Dr. Hoque worked in several technical committees of IEEE/IEEE BDS co-sponsored conferences such as Organizing Chair (ECCE 2023, ICCIT 2022/23/24, IEEE WEICON-ECE 2022/23/24), TPC Chair (ACMI 2021, ICREST 2021/23/25, ICISET 2024, ECCE 2019, IEEE R10 HTC 2017), TPC Co-chair (IEEE R10 IEEE HTC 17, TENSYMP 2020, ICISET 2018/21, IEEE WIECON-ECE 21) & Publication Chair (IEEE ECE WIECON 2018-19, IEEER10 TENSYMP 2020). His research interests include Human-Robot/Computer Interaction, Machine Learning, and Natural Language Processing. Dr. Hoque is a Senior Member of IEEE, IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Robotics & Automation Society, IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity Group, and IEEE Signal Processing Society, USA. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh.

The presentation will focus on the following key areas: IEEE’s Role in Advancing Technology, Contribution of IEEE AP-S, Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) and Impact on Society and the Engineering Community.

Biography:

Debatosh Guha is a Professor of the Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics, University of Calcutta, India Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellow of INAE-DST/SERB, Govt. of India, and an Adjunct Professor at the National Institute of Technology Jaipur. He is formerly HAL Chair Professor of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, Head of the Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics, and Director of the Centre for Research in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of the University of Calcutta.

He received the B. Tech. and M. Tech. degrees in Radio Physics and Electronics and Ph. D. in microwave engineering from the University of Calcutta in 1987, 1989, and 1994 respectively. He joined the same university as an assistant professor in 1994. He had undertaken his post-doctoral research at the Canadian defense university- Royal Military College of Canada, Ontario. He has been connected to different Universities and research institutes across the globe as a regular visitor and collaborator.
