Our next Piedmont Section meeting will be October 17, 2024. We had to reschedule the meeting from our 3rd Thursday (9/19) meeting date because of meeting room availability.

Our technical meeting will be a presentation by Dr. Hassan Raza, Clemson ECE Department. You my recognize Dr. Raza's name. He is the faculty member for Clemson's ECE Senior Projects 2.

Dr. Raza and Dr. Bill Reid accompanied the Clemson Hardware Team to SouthestCon 2024. Their students WON, yes WON, the Hardware Competition! Great job!!

Our meeting will follow our usual format, dinner starting at 6:30 PM paid for by the Section. This is a great opportunity for some personal networking and maybe a little bit of mentoring.

Its a also a great opportunity to learn about SoutheastCon 2025 Regional Conference March 22 - 27, 2025 in Charlotte. And, WOW, you can also learn about IEEE Life Member (LM) Evolution Conference 2025 June 11 - 13, 2025 at the Joyce Cummings Center, Tufts University, Boston. The 2024 LM Conference featured many interesting presentations about AI. What will be presented at the Evolution 2025 conference?

BTW, both conferences have Technical Programs. Do you have a technical paper you want to present? Now is the time to get your paper ready and submit for review. If you don't have a paper, maybe you could be a reviewer.

At  7 PM the technical program will begin with Dr. Raza's presentation: Nanotechnology: From Atoms to Systems. Continue reading the event information for more details.

Trivia Question: What US President read his Sunday newspaper sitting at Table 18 in the Union Oyster House in Boston?

I look forward to seeing you Thursday, October 17, 2024.

Topic:

Nanotechnology: From Atoms to Systems

Hassan Raza

Abstract: Over the course of human civilization, we have witnessed various technological eras. These long and distant periods of history are remembered today based on the materials that were used, e.g. stone age, copper age, iron age, and more recently silicon age. We are now witnessing a new technological age of nanotechnology, which would be remembered by how we use the materials by engineering them at the atomic and the molecular scale. This atomic and molecular engineering at the nanoscale distinguishes the nanotechnology era from the previous ones. Exploring this wonderful and exciting world of nanotechnology is what this talk is all about. My objective is to introduce the newcomers to what I would like to call the greatest intellectual journey human mind has ever ventured. I will start the discussion from a single atom and lead the audience to system level design enabled by the bottom-up approach towards nanotechnology in various engineering and scientific disciplines.

Biography:

Hassan Raza is currently a Senior Lecturer at Clemson University. He received “Magoon Award for Excellence in Teaching” from Purdue University in 2004. He is also the recipient of “Presidential Faculty Fellowship” in 2010 and “Old Gold Fellowship” in 2011 from the University of Iowa. He has served as an editor of a book on Graphene Nanoelectronics published by Springer in 2012. His research is focused on “anything
that is small” for solving complex problems from theoretical, experimental, and computational approaches. He has authored two textbooks, Nanoelectronics Fundamentals and Freshman Lectures on Nanotechnology.

In addition to Clemson University, he has had the pleasure of teaching undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Iowa, Rowan University, Georgia Southern University, and University of the Punjab. He was a postdoctoral associate at Cornell University in 2007-2009. He received his PhD, (Electrical and Computer Engineering, ECE), in 2007 and MS (ECE) in 2002 from Purdue University, MS (Operations Management) in 2016 from the University of Arkansas and BS (honors, Electrical Engineering) in 2001 from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore Pakistan.

At Clemson, he also serves in several leadership positions including serving as the Chair of ECE Laboratory Committee and the Chair of ECE Assessment Oversight Committee.
