Got a project with significant system/software components with contracted or subcontracted acquisition? Are you supplying any such systems to prime contractors? As every project manager know, whether working on the acquisition or supply side, defining requirements for information at the earliest possible stage of the project life cycle is important. Documentation and management of information is never cheap. Judicious gathering of these requirements and agreeing on deliverables at the beginning of the project and managing changes can have significant positive impacts on project outcomes.

During the past two decades, the project management discipline evolved producing “A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)–Fifth Edition.” During the same period, Institute for the Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), in collaboration with the ISO/IEC international standard development body, has produced a solid framework for system and software life cycle processes anchored by two fundamental standards: ISO/IEC/IEEE15288-2015 Systems and software engineering—System life cycle processes and ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207-2008 Systems and software engineering — Software life cycle processes. This standard body also produced a number of other supplemental standards to provide further guidance on specific aspects of the life cycle processes.

In this knowledge sharing session, jointly sponsored by PMI Chicagoland and IEEE Chicago Chapter of Technical and Engineering Management Society, the speaker will share with the audience a detailed set of requirements for information needed by users from both acquirer and supplier points of view. Based on the ISO/IEC/IEEE Std. 26512:2011 Systems and software engineering — Requirements for acquirers and suppliers of information for users, she will explore PMBOK domain of Project Procure Management providing a comprehensive overview and a possible checklist that project managers may use for managing contracts through the product life cycle . She invites the audience to share their own methodologies during the two-hour long discussion.
