Topic:

"Bioengineering in Rehabilitation and Injury Causation”

Abstract: Bioengineering is a field that studies living organisms with engineering and physics principles. This talk will provide an overview of two areas of bioengineering: Rehabilitation and Injury Causation. In Rehabilitation, engineering concepts are used to help understand and improve human balance and mobility. In particular, the talk will describe how children with cerebral palsy, amputees, and older adults have all benefited from engineers leveraging feedback control systems. For Injury Causation, the talk will include research and forensic investigations into human tissue tolerance and will include some case studies.

Biography:

Dr. Adam Goodworth applies engineering approaches to investigate the human body. In particular, he studies human movement, balance, and biomechanics. His professional activities include research with federally funded grants and consulting. Dr. Goodworth received BS and MS degrees in Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines before completing his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Oregon Health Science University. He is a Professional Engineer and an accredited Accident Reconstructionist. He has postdoctoral training in pathological gait, a certificate in prosthetics from the Newington Certificate Program, and worked 9 years in a Clinical Physical Therapy (DPT) program prior to joining Westmont College in 2019.
