IEEE Day at CMR University was a grand celebration of technological innovation and community building. The event commenced with a warm welcome by the Chair of the IEEE Student Branch, emphasizing the significance of IEEE Day and its global mission to foster technology for humanity.

took part and graced the occasion. They spoke passionately about the growing importance of IEEE in shaping the careers of university students and coping up with the advancing technology. The speakers promoted various aspects of IEEE, such as:

  • Authenticity and Maintenance of IEEE’s Standards:
    During the event, the Dean of Academics highlighted IEEE's longstanding reputation as a leader in the development and maintenance of global technical standards. They spoke about how IEEE has consistently upheld the authenticity and rigor of its work in fields ranging from electronics to software engineering. The speakers underscored how the IEEE Standards Association ensures that technological progress remains reliable, secure, and globally recognized, reinforcing IEEE's role as a cornerstone of innovation.

  • Historical Importance of IEEE:
    The event also included a brief reflection on IEEE's rich history, with speakers reminding attendees that IEEE’s origins date back to 1884, when the organization was first established to support electrical engineering professionals. This historical significance was highlighted to demonstrate how IEEE has grown from its early days to become the largest technical professional organization in the world, with over 400,000 members. The speakers acknowledged how IEEE’s historical contributions have shaped modern engineering and continue to pave the way for future technological developments.

  • Research and Development:
    The Dean encouraged students to engage in innovative research, emphasizing IEEE’s vast digital library and access to research papers, which have become crucial resources for students and professionals alike. The authenticity of IEEE research materials was particularly highlighted as one of the most trusted sources of information for engineers worldwide.

  • Collaboration and Networking:
    Faculty members emphasized how IEEE provides a platform for cross-disciplinary collaboration and global networking. By maintaining a vast network of professionals, IEEE has helped shape advancements in technologies such as AI, robotics, and telecommunications. The event showcased how students can leverage this network to collaborate on cutting-edge projects and enhance their career prospects.

  • Student Participation:
    The DOA, who had in their past served for 3 years as a branch counsellor and had also won the Best IEEE student branch counsellor award, DORI, the Dean of Lakeside campus & Director of SOET, and the Deputy Director of SOET & Head/DS motivated the university students to actively participate in IEEE-led conferences, hackathons, and global initiatives that shape the future of technology. By being part of IEEE, students are not only learning from authentic sources but are also contributing to the development and maintenance of the technological ecosystem

The IEEE Day celebration concluded on a high note with a panel discussion on “The Future of Technology,” where expert panelists, including IEEE members and university faculty, shared their insights on the pivotal role of IEEE in leading technological revolutions worldwide.

IEEE’s Role in Setting Global Standards and Student Participation

Dr. Sudhir K Routray the Dean of Academics at CMR University emphasized IEEE’s pivotal role in developing and maintaining global technical standards across diverse fields such as electronics, communication networks, and software engineering. He spoke about how IEEE’s authenticity in upholding these standards has contributed to the reliability and security of modern technologies. As a former branch counselor who was also awarded the best student branch counsellor, Dr. Routray encouraged students to take advantage of IEEE’s vast resources and actively participate in conferences, workshops, and other events. He also shared how his involvement with IEEE helped him stay aligned with global technological advancements throughout his career.

Biography:

Dr. Sudhir K Routray is a Senior Member at IEEE, experienced Researcher with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry. Skilled in Computer Science, LaTeX, Optimization, Physics, and Robotics. Strong research professional with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) focused in Telecommunications Engineering from Universidade de Aveiro.

Dr. Routray earned a

  2. Master of Science (Engineering) in Data Communications - Communication Engineering from The University of Sheffield, Sheffield, United Kingdom.

Dr. Glan Devadhas George focused on IEEE’s contribution to the world of research and innovation. He highlighted the extensive digital library of IEEE, which provides students and professionals access to millions of research papers, journals, and conference proceedings. Dr. Devadhas encouraged the students to leverage these resources for their research work and to contribute to the ongoing technological revolution. He also shared his own experiences of conducting research through IEEE platforms, emphasizing how IEEE facilitates high-quality, peer-reviewed publications that have a global impact.

Biography:

Dr. Glan Devadhas George currently serves as the Director of the Directorate of Research and Innovation (DORI) and Director IQAC I/C at CMR University (CMRU), Bengaluru. With more than two decades of experience in teaching and research, he has held several key positions, including Vice Principal, Professor, Head of Department, Chairman of the Board of Studies, Member of the Academic Council, and Doctoral Committee Member in various esteemed engineering colleges and universities in India.

Dr. Devadhas has authored and co-authored 71 papers published in SCI and Scopus-indexed journals, as well as international conference proceedings.

He has received research and seminar grants from prominent organizations such as

  2. Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO)
  3. Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR)
  4. All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)

In addition to his extensive research background, he serves as the Associate Editor for the Elsevier CAE Journal and is a reviewer for several notable journals, including the International Journal of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Journal of Water Process Engineering, and International Journal of Modeling, Simulation & Scientific Computing.

He has actively participated in over 50 national and international seminars and has organized six IEEE International Conferences, one National Conference, and 10 national-level seminars. Dr. Devadhas has successfully supervised three Doctor of Philosophy scholars, with two additional candidates having submitted their theses, and is currently guiding five doctoral students. Furthermore, he has supervised 30 undergraduate projects and 12 postgraduate projects.

He notably served as Vice-Chair of the IEEE India Circuits and Systems Society (CASS) Chapter from 2016 to 2019. His contribution as Deputy Project Director for the NIU-SAT nano-satellite project from 2010 to 2015 stands as a highlight of his career. His research interests encompass soft computing, intelligent controller design, system identification, adaptive systems, and smart systems.

Dr. Kannan Natarajan of CMR University

Historical Significance and Cross-disciplinary Collaboration

Dr. Kannan Natarajan the Dean of Lakeside campus & Director of SOET, reflected on the rich history of IEEE, from its inception in 1884 to its evolution into the largest technical professional organization in the world. He spoke about how IEEE’s historical contributions have shaped modern engineering and paved the way for future technologies like AI, robotics, and telecommunications. He emphasized the collaborative spirit that IEEE fosters, enabling students and professionals from different disciplines to work together on innovative projects. He shared his experiences with cross-disciplinary collaborations and how IEEE has been instrumental in facilitating these initiatives. He encouraged the students' involvement and participation in the IEEE SB activities and announced a 50% concession on IEEE student membership fees and several other stances of student and faculty encouragement.

Biography:

Dr. Kannan Natarajan is an esteemed academician with a wealth of experience spanning over three decades in higher education and research. He currently serves as Professor, Dean of Lakeside Campus, and Director of School of Engineering and Technology at CMR University, Bengaluru, a position he has held since July 2024.

Before joining CMR University, Dr. Kannan Natarajan served as the Professor and Principal at The Oxford College of Engineering, Bengaluru, from March 2021. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping the academic framework and driving innovation in teaching and learning at the institution.

From September 2019 to December 2020, he held the role of Professor, Dean of Industry Relations, and Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at SRM IST, Ramapuram. His work focused on building strong industry connections to bridge the gap between academia and industry needs.

Dr. Kannan Natarajan’s academic journey began at Jayaram College of Engineering and Technology, where he dedicated more than two and a half decades (July 1995 to September 2019) as a Professor and Principal. His longstanding commitment to engineering education during this period laid the foundation for many successful academic and industry collaborations.

With a passion for education and a career dedicated to empowering students and faculty alike, Dr. Kannan continues to contribute to the field of engineering and technology education in India. His leadership and vast experience make him a key figure in advancing academic excellence at CMR University.

Dr. Manikandan SP Professor and Deputy Director of SOET, discussed the immense networking opportunities that IEEE offers. He emphasized that IEEE connects students with a global community of engineers, researchers, and professionals, opening doors to career growth and global collaborations. He shared how, during his career, IEEE events and conferences provided him with platforms to engage with experts and peers from around the world. Dr. Manikandan urged students to make the most of these opportunities, participate in IEEE-led competitions like hackathons, and stay connected with the rapidly evolving tech industry through IEEE’s global network.

Biography:

Dr. Manikandan SP is a highly accomplished academic professional currently serving as the Professor and Deputy Director of the School of Engineering and Technology (SOET) at CMR University (CMRU), Bengaluru. Since joining the university in May 2024, Dr. Manikandan has brought his extensive expertise in Computer Science and Engineering to lead various academic and research initiatives.

Prior to his role at CMR University, he held the position of Professor and Head at New Horizon College of Engineering, Bengaluru, where he served from April 2021 to May 2024. His leadership at New Horizon played a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of education and research within the department.

Dr. Manikandan also served as a Professor at Jerusalem College of Engineering, Chennai. His experience in teaching and mentoring students across different institutions has solidified his reputation as a dedicated educator and researcher.

Dr. Manikandan earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from Anna University, Chennai, completing the program with first-class distinction in 2014. His academic background, coupled with his leadership roles in higher education, continues to contribute to the advancement of engineering education and research at CMR University.
