Toolkit - IEEE Day 2024                 


This event is organized by IEEE Education Society as part of IEEE Education IEEE Day 2024. Its objective is to provide an opportunity for IEEE Education Society 2024 awardees and the IEEE Undergraduate Teaching  awardee to showcase their respective contributions. Some of them will also let us know  why they are members of IEEE Education Society and why they think they  are among this year's awardees.

Welcome and Introduction to IEEE Education IEEE Day 2024 Education Society 2024 Awardee Panel

Professor Hamadou Saliah-Hassane, Vice President of IEEE Educational Activities and Awards of the IEEE Education Society, will briefly introduce the panelists. He will also talk about the purpose of this meeting, which is part of IEEE Day 2024 for active IEEE members and anyone else seeking inspiration to be useful to humanity through the use of appropriate technologies, including those for learning and teaching.

Biography:

 

Prof. Saliah-Hassane earned a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from McGill University in Montreal, a Bachelor and Master of Applied Science degree from École Polytechnique de Montréal, Canada. He just retired as a full Professor from TELUQ University in Montreal where he taught Informatics and Computer Networks and Security. He is now an Associate Professor in several  universities including University Abdou Moumouni in Niger and an  he is also an Affiliate Professor at Florida Atlantic University in US. His research interests are on Intelligent Distributed Systems and Mobile Robotics.
Professor Saliah-Hassane  is the current Vice President Educational; Activities of IEEE Education Society (2022-2024). He chaired the Montreal IEEE Education Society Chapter (2005-2022). He was the Past Chair of IEEE Education Society Standards Committee (2010 - 2021) and the Past Chair of the Working Group of the joint standardization activity on “Secure and Trusted Learning Systems” (2019 -2021) sponsored by IEEE Education Society, IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) and IEEE Computer Society Learning Technology Standards Committee (CS/LTSC).
Professor Saliah-Hassane has received many awards in recognition of his accomplishments, including the 2024 Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions (LACCEI) Academic Medal of Merit, the IEEE Education Society’s EdWin C. Jones, Jr. Meritorious Service Award (2019) and a recognition of Commander of the Order of Academic Palms  (2022) from the President of Republic of Niger, his home country. And aligned with his work on Distributed Embedded Systems, the IEEE Standards Association award with appreciation for chairing and contributing to the development of IEEE Standard 1876™ - 2019 on “Networked Smart Learning Objects for Online Laboratories” (2019), the IEEE SA 2019 Emerging Technology Awarded to IEEE SA 1876™ - 2019 Working Group.

2024 Recipient of IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award

Professor R Iris Bahar, 2024 Recipient of IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award, will briefly introduce us to her exceptional journey as a passionate engineering educator, which earned her the IEEE 2024 Award “For innovative undergraduate teaching and transformative student mentoring that champion inclusivity in engineering and examine societal impacts of technology”.

Biography:

Prof. R. Iris Bahar received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in computer engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She is a faculty member in the Computer Science Department at the Colorado School of Mines, where she currently serves at their Department Head.  Before joining Mines, she was on the faculty at Brown University for 26 years and held dual appointments as Professor of Engineering and Professor of Computer Science.   Her research interests focus on energy-efficient and reliable computing, from the system level to device level.  Most recently this includes the design of robotics systems.  She is the 2019 recipient of the Marie R. Pistilli Women in Engineering Achievement Award and the Brown University School of Engineering Award for Excellence in Teaching in Engineering, as well as the recipient of the 2022 University of Illinois ECE Distinguished Alumni Award.  Iris is an IEEE fellow and an ACM Distinguished Scientist.

Pedro of University of Aveiro

2024 Recipient of Distinguished Chapter Leadership Award

Professor Pedro Fonseca will tell us about his career path and some of his specific contributions, which earned him recognition from the IEEE Education Society “For outstanding sustained effort in enhancing engineering education by developing and involving the Portuguese Chapter of the IEEE Education Society members in invaluable chapter activities”.

Biography:

 

 

 

Prof. Pedro Fonseca (S’86, M’89, SM’18) was born in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1964. He received the Licenciatura degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, in 1988, the M. Sc. degree in Electronic Engineering from the University College of North Wales, Bangor, UK, in 1990, and the Ph. D. degree in Electronics from the University of Aveiro and the Ph. D. in Informatics from the Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine, Nancy, France, in 1999.

From 1990 to 1991, he was with Tecnirob, S.A. In 1991, he joined the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics at the University of Aveiro. From 2007 to 2010, he served as CEO of Micro I/O, Lda. in Aveiro and, in 2010, he returned to the University of Aveiro. His research interests include visible light positioning and active learning strategies. He is the author of several registered patents.

Dr. Fonseca is a senior member of Ordem dos Engenheiros, Portugal. He was the recipient of “New Frontiers in Education” award from the regional office of Ordem dos Engenheiros in 2017. From 2018 to 2023, he served as Chair of IEEE Education Portugal Chapter and he is currently Vice-Chair of Portugal Section of IEEE.

Mohamed of Moroccan School of Engineering Science (EMSI) Group

2024 Recipient of IEEE William E. Sayle II Award for Achievement in Education

Professor Mohamed Essaaidi will tell us about his carrier path, why he choose to be an IEEE Education Society member and some of his activities that earned him recognition from the IEEE Education Society “For leadership in and contributions to advancing engineering education and digital transformation.”.

Biography:

 

 

 

Prof. Mohamed Essaaidi (IEEE Senior Member) is CEO of the Moroccan School of Engineering Science (EMSI) Group, (Since January 2023), Chief of Party of Interactive Digital Center Morocco at UM6P (since November 2020) and a Professor and past Dean of ENSIAS school of Computer Science, Mohammed V University, Rabat, Morocco (2011-2023), Past Director of International Cooperation at the Ministry of General Affairs & Governance, Morocco (2019), and past faculty member of the of Abdelmalek Essaadi University,
Tetuan, Morocco (1993-2011).

He was the IEEE Global Cities Alliance, Middle East & Africa Chairman (2020-2022), and he has been the IEEE Humanitarian Technologies Board Programs Committee Chair and IEEE Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technologies Global Chair since January 2023, and IEEE Public Safety Technology, Education Chair (2021-22).

In addition, Prof. Essaaidi has played a crucial role in the accreditation and quality assurance of engineering education globally as a member of the IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) Global Committee on Accreditation Activities (2018-2019). His contributions to the IEEE Teaching Excellence Hub Editorial Board have furthered the dissemination of best practices in engineering education (2021). As the founding chair of the IEEE Morocco Education Society Chapter (2008), Prof. Essaaidi has promoted educational excellence and innovation, creating a vibrant community of educators committed to advancing engineering education.

He is also the founder and past Chairman of the IEEE Morocco Section (2005-2016), co-founder and chair of several IEEE Organizational Units in Morocco during the last two decades.

He has authored and co-authored 10 books and more than 200 papers in international refereed journals and conferences in the field of Electrical and Computer engineering and its diverse applications. In addition, he is the founder and the General Chair / co-chair of several IEEE technically sponsored international conferences such as Information and Communication Technologies International Symposium (2005, 2007), NATO Advance Research Workshop on Information Security Assurance (2005), International Conference of Multimedia Computing and Systems series (2009-2016). He also co-organized and co-chaired IEEE SmartCities Summit in May 2020, the US National Academies 5th Arab American Science, Engineering and Medicine Frontiers Symposium in November 2017, Rabat, Morocco and US NSF sponsored workshop on Smart Cities in January 2016 in Rabat, Morocco. He has also served in the Organizing committees and TPC
and presented keynote talks at many other international conferences worldwide.

Furthermore, Prof. Essaaidi served as an international expert on Digital Transformation and Smart Cities for several international organizations such as UN, ITU, UNESCO, EU, ICESCO and UCLG Africa, and he is a member of the Oversight Committee of US National Academies of Science Engineering & Medicine US - Arab and US-Africa Frontiers of Science Engineering & Medicine Symposia (Since 2020).
Moreover, in the framework of his position as the Director of International Cooperation in the Ministry of General Affairs and Governance (Morocco), he was involved in the coordination of the World Bank Group Morocco Country Partnership Framework (2019-2024) and OECD Morocco Country Program (2019-2024) among other international cooperation programs.

Prof. Essaaidi is a the recipient of the 2023 IEEE MGA Larry K. Wilson Transnational Award For “exemplary leadership, significant contributions, and sustained excellence in leading IEEE Technical Activities and Humanitarian programs globally”.

Biography:

 

Akshay R S is a visionary leader, passionate advocate for education, and champion of technological innovation. Currently working as Deputy Engineer at Bharat Electronics Limited, the 2024 graduate in Electronics and Communication Engineering from
Government Engineering College Barton Hill has spent over three years actively volunteering with the IEEE Education Society Kerala Chapter. His contributions to the chapter, especially through leadership roles such as Student Representative and Membership Development Coordinator, have been instrumental in advancing its mission of promoting technological excellence for the benefit of humanity.
As a student volunteer under the IEEE Education Society Kerala Chapter, he actively contributed to meaningful causes within the organization that strived to unify collective efforts in fulfilling IEEE's mission of promoting technological innovation and excellence
for the greater good of humanity.

With a firm belief on the transformative power of education, he spearheaded initiatives that utilized technological interventions to drive societal progress. This resulted in the successful execution of vibrant projects of the organization including those aimed at pre-university, university and continuing education categories, and also at professionals. His innovative leadership, commitment to education, and ability to drive meaningful projects have earned him recognition, including the 'Outstanding Student Volunteer Award '23' by the OU. Beyond IEEE, Akshay serves on the executive committee of the MBS Youth Choir, contributing to causes like national integration, communal harmony, and social upliftment through music. In addition to his technical and professional contributions, Akshay is also proficient in public speaking, having won the state-level Temperance Contest - High School Speech Category in 2017. As an enthusiastic learner of Carnatic music, his dedication to using both technology and the arts as tools for positive change
reflects his vision for a more inclusive and innovative future.

Leesha of Ahalia School of Engineering and Technology

Dr. Leesha Paul is a professor in the Department of Electronics and Communication engineering at Ahalia School of Engineering and Technology. With a career spanning over 30 years, she began as a lecturer at NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad, in 1993 and rose to the rank of Professor in 2019. During her tenure at NSSCE, she served as the Staff Counsellor for the IEEE Student Chapter and held several leadership roles within IEEE including Executive Member of the IEEE Malabar Section and Chair of Educational Activities. Currently, she chairs the IEEE Education Society, Kerala Chapter, and has published around 15 research papers in international journals and conferences.

Dr Oscar Karnalim, the first recipient of IEEE Education Society the Best Doctoral Dissertation Award in the Field of Engineering Education will talk about why he thinks he deserves the 2024 Best Doctoral Dissertation Award in the Field of Engineering Education and also why he chose to be a graduate student member of the IEEE Education Society.

Biography:

 

Oscar Karnalim is an associate professor and the dean of Faculty of Smart Technology and Engineering, Maranatha Christian University, Indonesia. He completed his Ph.D. in Information Technology at the University of Newcastle, Australia (2022). The dissertation resulted in 20 Scopus-indexed research papers: five journal articles, seven full conference papers, four short conference papers, two conference posters, and two working group reports. He currently serves as an editor for Discover Education and Journal of Information Systems Engineering and Business Intelligence. He is also a program committee, a reviewer, and an organizing committee for many journals and conferences including IEEE ToE, IEEE FIE, IEEE TALE, IEEE EDUCON, Wiley’s CAE, and ACM ITiCSE. His research interests are engineering education, educational technologies, artificial intelligence, and software engineering. He has published over 100 research papers with more than 1000 citations. He was the head of Master Program in Computer Science, the CTO of two startups, the general chair of IEEE ICE-SMARTec, an editor for Scientific Programming journal, and a seasonal expert.

Dr. Melany M. Ciampi is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Currently is the President of World Council on System Engineering and Information Technology (WCSEIT), President of Safety Health and Environment Research Organization (SHERO), President of World Council on Communication and Arts (WCCA), Vice-President of Sciences and Education Research Council (COPEC), Vice- President of Fishing Museum Friends Society (AAMP) and Secretary of Education Society of the IEEE (IEEE-EdSoc). She is also Chair of Intersociety Cooperation Committee of Education Society of the IEEE (IEEE-EdSoc) since 2011, Co-Chair of Working Group "Ingenieurpädagogik im Internationalen Kontext" in IGIP (Internationale Gesellschaft für Ingenieurpädagogik) since 2002, Member of Strategic Planning Committee of Education Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc (IEEE-EdSoc) since 2009 and Board Member of "Global Council on Manufacturing and Management" (GCMM) since 2004. She is Member of Board of Governors of International Council for Engineering and Technology Education (INTERTECH) since 2000, Member of Board of Governors of Education Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc (IEEE-EdSoc) since 2000 and Member of Board of Governors of World Council on System Engineering and Information Technology (WCSEIT) since 2012. She was Vice-President of "Internationale Gesellschaft für Ingenieurpädagogik" (IGIP), President of Brazilian Chapter of Education Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc (IEEE-EdSoc), Member of Executive Committee of IGIP, State Councilor of Brazilian Association for the Advancement of Science (SBPC) and Manager of International Relations of SENAC School of Engineering and Technology. She is a Member of IGIP (International Society for Engineering Education), SEFI (European Society for Engineering Education), ASEE (American Society for Engineering Education), INTERTECH (International Council for Engineering and Technology Education), and RCI (Cartagena Network of Engineering). She was the first American woman Professor to receive the title of "International Engineering Educator" of IGIP. She received numerous honors due to his services to Scientific Commonwealth and Technological Cooperation among them: Award of the International Council on Engineering and Technology Education, Award from the International Council on Engineering and Computer Education, Award of Recognition of International Society for Engineering Education and Medal of Brazilian Association of Civil Engineers. She is a Senior Member of IEEE. She received the IEEE Edwin C. Jones Jr. Meritorious Service Award of 2011. She has over one hundred and fifty published articles in several conferences and journals.
