As part of the IEEE Days celebration, the IEEE Student Branch at SMRCEM organized an insightful workshop focused on microcontrollers, catering to students interested in embedded systems and electronics. The session provided a comprehensive overview of various types of microcontrollers, including the widely used ATmega 328P and the versatile ESP8266 NodeMCU, as well as single-board computers like the Raspberry Pi. This selection of hardware catered to both beginners and more advanced learners, giving them the foundational knowledge necessary to begin working with microcontrollers in real-world applications.

The workshop delved into the specifics of bare-metal programming in C, a crucial skill for anyone working with microcontrollers. Students were taught how to write low-level code that directly interfaces with hardware, bypassing operating systems for more efficient control. This hands-on programming section gave participants practical exposure to coding on microcontrollers, allowing them to understand how to manage peripherals, control inputs and outputs, and handle interrupts and timers.

Another important aspect of the workshop was understanding how to read and interpret datasheets—an essential skill for embedded engineers. The session offered a basic yet thorough guide on how to navigate through microcontroller datasheets, focusing on key areas such as pin configurations, electrical characteristics, memory organization, and peripheral features. This knowledge equips students to make informed decisions when selecting components and designing embedded systems.

By the end of the workshop, participants had gained a holistic understanding of how microcontrollers function and how they can be programmed and applied in various projects. The session not only sparked interest in embedded systems but also provided students with the practical tools needed to pursue further exploration in this field.
