IEEE Day is celebrated globally to commemorate the first gathering of engineers in 1884 to share their technical ideas. Currently, IEEE Day celebrations are held between 29th September and 12th October, promoting expert knowledge in various technical fields.
The IEEE Uva Wellassa University Student Branch celebrated IEEE Day on Sunday, 6th October 2024, from 6:00 p.m. onwards, through a Zoom session on the topic AI and Robotics: Revolutionizing the Future of Technology. The keynote speaker, Dr. Logeeshan Velamanickam, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, delivered valuable insights. Around 200 undergraduates from across Sri Lanka participated, enhancing their knowledge and curiosity in the fields of AI and Robotics.
In conclusion, the IEEE Day Celebrations of the IEEE Uva Wellassa University Student Branch provided an excellent opportunity for undergraduates to deepen their understanding of AI and Robotics. Dr. Logeeshan Velamanickam's insightful session left a lasting impact on the attendees, fostering curiosity and inspiring them to explore these rapidly evolving fields. The event successfully contributed to the spirit of IEEE Day by encouraging knowledge sharing and technological innovation among future engineers.

Biography:
Dr. Logeeshan Velmanickam (Ph.D.) is a Research Assistant in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Dakota State University. He received a BS degree with First Class Honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka (2015). His current research in Dr. Dharmakeerthi Nawarathna’s group focuses on the development of a Lab-on-a-chip device to detect single disease-related biomarkers in biological assays such as blood, serum or saliva, and target cell separation from a cell mixture by using Dielectrophoretic force.
