Throughout human history, we have been fascinated by the idea of an artificial or bionic eye. The closest we have ever gotten to the concept is a Retinal prosthesis known as ARGUS II retinal implant. This presentation will review the basic concepts of the retinal anatomy and physiology, and the science and reality of Argus II retinal implant program.

Biography:
Dr. Vishak John is a fellowship trained vitreo-retinal surgeon at Vistar Eye Center in
Roanoke, VA. Growing up here in the valley, he attended Cave Spring High /Roanoke
Valley Governor’s School before heading off to Wake Forest University. After
completing his MD program at Boston University School of Medicine, he performed his
ophthalmology residency at Emory University and a 2-year retinal surgery fellowship at
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. Previously he had worked as Retina Surgeon at
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center at Winston Salem and had served as faculty at the
Wake Forest University School of Medicine prior to coming back home to Roanoke in
2017. Currently Dr. John also serves as faculty at the VTC school of Medicine,
Roanoke, VA
