Abstract:

Traditionally, the energy system has been unilateral and segregated with centralised large energy generation clusters stepping the energy down to our houses and businesses. In our journey to Net Zero, decarbonisation is a whole system matter, in a system that is now becoming bilateral and changing towards a more decentralised model. Firstly, we will showcase how the electricity grid is set up and what is the governance model between all the involved players, then we will dive into how NESO keeps the lights on and why flexibility is so important at the moment and finally we will look at some challenges we are currently facing in setting up flexibility for success.

Bio: Nicolas Manea is currently serving as a Strategy Lead in the Distributed Flexibility team in NESO and working on wide flexibility coordination, standardisation and digitalisation matters. Previous to this role, Nicolas spend time working in a technical consultancy, where he focused on advising clients on their energy strategy journey. Nicolas has experience in industry wide Net Zero strategy, flexibility markets and technologies and digitalisation transition and he is a PhD candidate at Cardiff School of Engineering, where his research has focused on using blockchain to digitalise electricity flexibility.
