"World Space Week Celebration 2024”
ISRO is an important body in India and spearheads research in space science in India, also playing a huge role in the development of the country through educational, agricultural, communication, and defence sector projects. Hence, it is an important segment of UPSC science and technology syllabus. ISRO launched Chandrayaan-1 in 2008, purportedly the first probe to verify the presence of water on the Moon, and the Mars Orbiter Mission in 2013, the first Asian spacecraft to enter Martian orbit, making India the first country to succeed at this on its first attempt.
ISRO, with its pioneering missions like Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan, has positioned India as a key player in the global space community. As India prepares to celebrate its first National Space Day on August 23, 2024, this is the perfect opportunity to look back at some of the achievements of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Since its founding, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has been leading India's space exploration efforts, and continuously accomplishing ground-breaking missions like Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan as well as launching satellites that link our country to the rest of the world.

World Space Week is an International celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events: October 4, 1957: Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration. October 10, 1967: The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activates of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.
World Space Week consists of space education and outreach events held by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and astronomy clubs around the world in a common timeframe. World Space Week is coordinated by the United Nations with the support of the World Space Week Association (WSWA). The WSWA leads a global team of National Coordinators, who promote the celebration of World Space Week within their own countries.
