Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Concepts
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) have recently grown in popularity with the decrease in the cost of Lithium-Ion battery technology and the increase in renewable technologies. This course will focus on BESS concepts with a particular focus on identifying favorable ROI markets and use cases.
Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
• Understand battery terminology
• Describe drivers that impact BESS implementation
• Understand different battery technologies
• Identify good fit applications
• Explain different use cases
Biography:
John is a graduate of Virginia Tech in Industrial and Systems Engineering.
He spent the first 20 years of his career working in the Caterpillar dealer
network in Virginia, North Carolina, and Arizona. With power generation
as the basis for his work, John has filled many roles within the dealerships
including Project Manager, Sales Engineer, Rental Manager, and
Operations Manager. He’s also a certified Six Sigma Black Belt for process
improvement and holds certifications in data center design. John joined
Generac in 2012 and represents Generac and EGSA on the NFPA110/111
Technical Committee.

Chris Podwoski
Biography:
Chris has 40+ years of experience in the electrical contracting, energy management, and distributed and
standby power generation industries. For the last 11 years, Chris has served as a Sales Manager with Energy Systems
Southeast, the largest Generac Industrial Distributor in North America. In his current capacity he is responsible for the
sales promotion and industry awareness for battery energy storage systems and their commercial applications.
He is a graduate of Miami University with a degree in Business Administration.
