Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) and VAR/Voltage Optimization (VVO) from a Utility Perspective
The United States Department of Energy (DoE) has highlighted efficient energy delivery as one of the major attributes of future smart electric grids. Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) is an energy efficiency measure that reduces electrical energy consumption and peak demand through feeder level voltage reduction. CVR is implemented in an electrical grid through voltage control equipment i.e., capacitor banks, voltage regulators. ComEd’s CVR application reduces grid voltage automatically without any negative impact to customers’ regular operation. This is an emerging application in the power system operation and Utilities across the US have started introducing CVR in their grid operation because of the net positive impact CVR has in terms of energy efficiency and environmental benefits.
