Measuring Microwave Noise: from Standard to Advanced Techniques
ABSTRACT: This talk will describe state-of-the-art techniques to determine the noise performance of linear microwave networks. Basic principles will be first introduced to support a circuit approach to the description of microwave noise. After reviewing standard measurement concepts and techniques, 2 very recent novel demonstrations on how to measure a device noise parameters will be discussed: one is a new approach to the noise characterization to N port linear networks; the other one is a novel, tuner-less procedure particularly suited for the determination of on-wafer microwave transistor noise parameters. The implications to the measurement of differential amplifiers and to mm-wave device noise characterization will be addressed.
BIO: Dr. Luciano Boglione received his PhD in 1998 from the University of Leeds, UK, and he is a researcher with the US Naval Research Laboratory since 2011. His interests are in RF and mm-wave IC designs in advanced technologies and microwave noise theory and characterization. He has been a long time IEEE volunteer and he has been an IEEE Senior Member since 2007.
