IEEE PUNE SECTION STUDENT MEMBERSHIP DRIVE 2024 : COEP Technological University
The session began with Mr. Sunil Somani, Head of the Student Activities Committee (SAC) at IEEE, who provided an engaging overview of the event's objectives. He emphasized the importance of building bridges between industry and academia, a core mission of IEEE Pune Section, encouraging active participation from students, industry professionals, and academia. Mr. Somani opened with a discussion about Special Interest Groups (SIGs), explaining how these groups bring together members with common technical interests to collaborate on projects and share knowledge. He highlighted the ongoing success stories from the AI, IoT, and Robotics SIGs, calling for more student involvement to drive innovation. Next, he moved to Eureka, the section’s Innovation Challenge, designed to foster creativity among students and young professionals. Mr. Somani emphasized that this platform not only showcases innovative ideas but also provides students with mentorship from industry experts. He invited participants to contribute ideas, explaining how Eureka is key to transforming the regional innovation landscape. The spotlight then shifted to the Student Congress, where Mr. Somani outlined the critical role of the 32-member Student Council in guiding IEEE Pune Section’s student activities. He shared success stories from past congresses, stressing the opportunities for leadership development, networking, and project collaboration. As he announced the upcoming Student Council elections, he urged students to actively engage in their roles, contributing to both IEEE and their personal growth. A major highlight was the collaboration with GMRT (Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope). Mr. Somani spoke about the global significance of GMRT in radio astronomy and its partnership with IEEE Pune Section. This collaboration offers students a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge scientific research, and Mr. Somani encouraged them to explore internships and research positions at GMRT. In the next segment, Mr. Somani discussed the Industry-Academia Connect initiative, focusing on the Mentor-Mentee Program. He explained how the program brings together experienced industry mentors to guide students, providing insights into what’s currently happening in the industry. From the rise of AI, automation, and IoT to changes in technology adoption across sectors, he urged students to leverage these connections for better industry preparedness and career planning. Moving forward, Mr. Somani talked about IEEE PuneCon 2024, an exciting collaboration between IEEE Pune Section and DIAT (Defence Institute of Advanced Technology). He explained that the conference will offer a platform for researchers, professionals, and students to present papers on cutting-edge topics. He called for submissions, reminding the audience of the prestigious networking and publication opportunities IEEE conferences provide. As the session continued, Mr. Somani emphasized the benefits of IEEE membership for students. He introduced resources like IEEE Spectrum Magazine, the IEEE Xplore Digital Library, and IEEE DataPort, encouraging students to explore the wealth of technical papers, journals, and knowledge that IEEE makes available. He also highlighted IEEE ResumeLab, an essential tool for building professional profiles, and spoke about how students can gain recognition and awards through IEEE’s many programs, such as the IEEE PES India Scholarship Award (IPISA) and the section's nine different awards. Mr. Somani introduced IEEE Xtreme 18.0, the globally renowned 24-hour coding competition, happening on 26 October at 5:30 PM. He encouraged students to join this intense competition to test their programming skills while networking with participants from around the world.
Anannya Srivastava , Pune section Co- SSR shared updates on the IEEE Pune Section podcasts titled Beyond Conversations, available on YouTube, where industry leaders discuss emerging trends in technology and innovation. This provides valuable insights into industry developments and government schemes that students can benefit from.
In conclusion, Mr. Somani and Anannya Srivastava provided a glimpse of the latest edition of the Reminiscence Newsletter, which chronicles the achievements, events, and future initiatives of the IEEE Pune Section. They invited students to contribute to the next edition, encouraging them to share their experiences and insights.
The session wrapped up with Kshitij Talks, where guest speakers from industry provided insights into the IT industry and government schemes for tech development. Anannya highlighted how these schemes can help students pursue innovation and entrepreneurship.
