On Wednesday, November 6th, 2024, the IEEE Women in Engineering (WiE) ITU Society, in collaboration with the Green Youth Movement (GYM) Club and Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, hosted the Breast Cancer Awareness Day at ITU. This impactful event aimed to spread awareness about breast cancer, promote early detection, and raise funds for life-saving treatments and research. 

Event Overview

The event, held in the auditorium and corridor on the 6th floor of ITU, was a resounding success, attracting a large number of participants throughout the day. The activities included an Awareness Session, a Food and Mini Plant Sale, a Card-Making Station, Fun Games, and a Jamming Session. The theme for the day was to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness, with attendees enthusiastically embracing this message. 

Key Activities:

• Awareness Session (1:00 PM - 2:30 PM): A session led by a female doctor from Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital was held exclusively for women, covering vital information about breast cancer, the importance of self-examinations, and early detection techniques. This session was highly informative and well-received by the attendees.

• Food and Mini Plant Sale: Homemade treats and mini plants were sold to raise funds for the cause. Contributions for the sale were made by students and faculty, and the generosity shown was remarkable. The funds raised during the sale will directly support the efforts of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital.

• Card-Making Station: Participants showed their support for breast cancer patients by creating encouraging cards. These heartfelt messages were sent to patients at Shaukat Khanum Hospital, offering them hope and strength during their treatment.

• Fun Games with Donations: Students participated in various fun games with a small donation to support the cause. These activities created an atmosphere of camaraderie and community spirit, further reinforcing the purpose of the event.

• Jamming Session (2:30 PM Onwards): The event ended on a high note with a lively jamming session, where students and faculty came together to enjoy music, relax, and unwind in a supportive community setting.

Donation Booths and Contributions:

In addition to the activities on November 6th, donation booths were set up on November 4th at Barki Campus and November 6th at ITU. These booths allowed the ITU community to make direct contributions to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital. The generosity of the participants was overwhelming, and a significant amount was raised to support breast cancer patients. 

Conclusion:

The Breast Cancer Awareness Day at ITU not only raised funds but also educated and inspired many about the importance of early detection and proactive healthcare. It was a day of giving, learning, and uniting for a cause that touches so many lives. 

We hope that this event serves as a reminder of the strength we have when we come together for a common goal. Let’s continue to empower women, save lives, and spread awareness. 🌸

• Booth Operations End

  • Final opportunity for donations, food sales, and card-making.
  • Volunteers ensure all booths are closed, and all donations are collected and accounted for.

Throughout the Day (10:00 AM - 5:00 PM)

• Donation Booth

  • Ongoing collection of direct donations via QR codes, as well as contributions to the food sale and plant sale.
  • Volunteers available to assist with donation processes and ensure smooth operations.
