Inaugural event - San Diego Section IoT SIG, launch of new Interest Group & Talk Series


Multiple technologies evolved and converged over the last 140 years resulting in a powerful platform that we now call IoT. This presentation will address (i) a historical perspective of Internet of Things (IoT) and (ii) some Healthcare related applications of IoT that the speaker is pursuing in his lab.

The first part of the talk is an abridged version of course-1 from a 6-course IoT specialization offered by Coursera. This course was commissioned by Qualcomm and developed at UCSD to teach learners hands-on skills for building IoT devices using a smartphone platform. The thesis in this part of the talk traces how multiple technologies evolved and converged - specifically, (i) circuit switched networks, (ii) packet switched networks, (iii) computer-telephony integration, (iv) wireless technologies and (v) features and apps to highlight significant advances that led up to IoT.

The second part of this talk will address how the stories of the pioneers motivate us to leverage this platform with unprecedented potential to build exciting products and services in domains such as drones, automotive, healthcare, etc. The speaker left Qualcomm about 4 years ago and joined UCSD to pursue hard problems in healthcare. The challenges in connecting billions of sensors to the cloud – low power sensing, efficient communication, distributed processing, security, inference, etc. – are similar to those in healthcare applications. In addition, each healthcare application appears to have its own set of unique challenges – we have made extensive collaborations with clinical community to guide us through these. We are presently working on (i) advanced hearing aids, (ii) concussion assessment in youth sports, (iii) falls risk assessment and (iv) spasticity assessment in cerebral palsy, stroke and other neuromuscular disorders. This presentation will address some aspects of these applications to highlight IoT applications in healthcare.

Biography:

Harinath Garudadri is an Associate Research Scientist at the UC San Diego’s Qualcomm Institute of Calit2. He moved to academia in Nov. 2013 after 26 years in the industry to work on technologies that will improve healthcare delivery beyond hospital walls. He has a PhD in electrical engineering (1988) from University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C. where he spent half his time in ECE and the other half in School of Audiology and Speech Sciences, Faculty of Medicine. His industry contributions have been incorporated into cell phones and commercial networks. Hari has 42 granted patents (9 in body area networks, 8 in audio, 6 in video, 5 in speech, 3 in biomedical signal processing, and 11 in voice recognition), and over 16 pending patents in biomedical signal processing and related areas. Hari has over 43 peer-reviewed publications. His contributions were incorporated in 14 international standards specifications.
